We are looking for a Senior Functional Safety Engineer to join our Functional Safety team. You will act as a company-wide subject matter expert (SME) in the functional safety of machinery. You will not only manage the safety lifecycle but will also define the strategic direction for safety architecture, mentor junior engineers, and lead complex cross-functional initiatives to ensure our robotic platforms meet the highest global standards.
You will be responsible for coordinating and managing functional safety aspects of the engineering process in cross functional teams. As a Senior Functional Safety Engineer your work will include conducting risk assessments, developing safety concepts and defining architecture, creating functional safety requirements to define the risk reduction strategy of our Electronic and Electro-Programable Safety systems.

The Functional Safety team is responsible for the planning and coordination of functional safety activities in the development phases of the safety lifecycle. The team routinely interfaces with multi-disciplinary teams across the business including functional safety management, suppliers, manufacturing, and customers. The team is responsible for maintaining the safety plan, and for monitoring the progress of the safety activities.

The base range for this position in the posted location is $120,000.00 - $165,000.00 however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The compensation package includes medical, dental, vision, disability, 401K, PTO and/or other benefits.

What you’ll do
- Serve as a primary technical resource and "go-to" expert for functional safety across the organization.
- Lead the planning and execution of the full safety lifecycle for complex, multi-disciplinary robotic systems, ensuring compliance with industry norms.
- Drive high-level safety management activities during all project phases including hazard analysis and risk assessment (HARA), DFMEA, qualitative and quantitative fault tree analysis, safety requirements specification (SRS), verification and validation.
- Architect and optimize product development processes to integrate functional safety practices into the V-model lifecycle at a systemic level.
- Collaborate with project managers, development teams, and customers to align safety goals with business objectives.
- Participate in the design process and provide professional feedback to achieve the safety goals of the business.
- Conduct reviews with product teams to ensure functional safety standards are met throughout product development cycles.
- Lead design release signoffs and conduct critical reviews with product teams to ensure rigorous safety standards are met.
- Report and escalate proactively to project managers and/or design leads.
- Support safety systems and issues at customer sites through remote collaboration and on-site visits as needed.
- Own and maintain global product safety punch lists, driving long-term improvements in safety system performance and reliability.
- Travel up to 20%.
- BS degree in an Engineering related discipline, Master’s preferred
- Minimum of 8 years of experience driving product safety and compliance in complex systems
- In-depth knowledge of product safety standards and regulations such as ISO 12000, IEC 61508, ISO 13849, RIA R15.06 / RIA R15.08, OSHA, UL and NFPA 79
- Extensive experience with system engineering approaches (requirements engineering / management, functional analysis and allocation, architecture design, validation, and verification) and with change & configuration management.
- TÜV FSE certification preferred
- Comprehensive background in a wide range of device designs, technologies, and human-machine interfaces
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills for internal and external consumption
- Excellent documentation skills and practice.
- Proficient in word processing, spreadsheets, power point presentations
- Ability to operate independently in a matrix organization and navigate complex business systems
- Strong technical leadership, planning and organization/control skills and approaches challenges with a positive attitude
- Ability to present complex safety data to diverse audiences, including executive leadership and external stakeholders.
- Up to 20% of travel may be required. Employees must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive and/or fly to client and other customer locations.
- The employee is responsible for owning a credit card and managing expenses personally to be reimbursed on a bi-weekly basis.
