What are the responsibilities and job description for the Athletic Facilities/Grounds position at Sylvania Schools?
This is a 9 month position, March 1 through November 30.
PURPOSE OF POSITION: Level III Buildings/Grounds employee works in general maintenance to maintain the athletic facilities within the district.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or the equivalent.
- Demonstrated record of successful employment.
- Turf Grass Certificate and/or Degree or 5 years of turf grass experience.
- Must successfully pass a physical assessment including a material handling lift test up to 60 pounds.
- State of Ohio pesticide applicator’s license.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Successful experience in grounds maintenance work with Sylvania Schools is preferred.
- Able to safely operate automotive equipment, mower, tractor, front-end loader, dump truck and other heavy equipment as needed and in accordance with all laws and regulations.
- Three to five years of athletic field or golf course or other similar experience desired.
- CSFM certification desired.
- Knowledge of turf grass management and irrigation systems.
- Excellent communications and interpersonal skills.
- Computer use skills and the willingness to use technology.
- Strong work ethic.
- Communicate clearly and document all coordination with administration, especially with athletic directors.
- Demonstrate communication skill proficiency in writing, e-mail, and verbally.
- Ability to work without close supervision.
- Must be able to perform manual labor. Must complete all training as required by Sylvania Schools and/or the Ohio Department of Education.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- TURF CULTURAL PRACTICES:
- Complete mowing, weed treatment, disease prevention and treatment, fertilizer application, and irrigation schedule.
- Working knowledge of irrigation systems and pumps.
- Ensure appropriate equipment operation to reduce turf damage.
- Maintain synthetic turf according to manufacturer's recommended practices and procedures.
- FACILITIES, FIELDS, AND GROUNDS CARE:
- Perform custodial duties and maintenance including, but not limited to, cleaning, plumbing, painting, carpentry, and electrical.
- Schedule and complete all field preparation, including but not limited to maintenance of synthetic turf system, fertilizing, mowing, lining, reseeding, etc.
- Be available during all athletic contests scheduled at stadiums for emergency maintenance issues and to open and close stadiums for events.
- Plow snow from all school facilities as designated by the Director of Facilities.
- Complete repairs to (but not limited to) bleachers, press box, locker rooms, and restrooms as needed.
- Haul equipment, furniture, food items, or other items as directed by the Director of Facilities or Food Services Manager or their designees.
- OTHER:
- Exposure to hazardous chemicals.
- Possible exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue.
- Ability to work from a ladder and/or scaffold or other safe and approved methods of assent.
- Attend department meetings and training seminars as required by the Director of Facilities.
- Operate all equipment in a safe and proper manner.
- Make necessary minor repairs to equipment, and perform routine maintenance on all equipment as needed.
- Responsible to enter personal absences and clock in/out via the Red Rover System, and to communicate same-day absences to the Director of Facilities and Human Capital.
- Responsible to check your district email account on a regular basis, and to communicate as needed via email.
- Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as necessary to assure the successful daily operation of the department.
