Job Overview
Sylvan Learning of Westheimer Lakes is seeking an engaging Reading, Writing, and SAT Tutor to work with students ranging from early readers through high school. The ideal candidate enjoys helping students build strong literacy skills, increase confidence, and prepare for academic success, including SAT Reading & Writing. The Sylvan Teacher is responsible for creating a positive personal learning experience for students by teaching students using Sylvan program materials and processes. Using the program materials, the Teacher creates balanced and robust learning experiences for students. The Sylvan Teacher evaluates student progress on each curated assignment, communicates this progress, and works with Center Staff to ensure learning is personal for each student
Duties
- Deliver engaging, personalized instruction in Reading, Writing, and SAT Reading/Writing using Sylvan curriculum and instructional methods.
- Teach students ranging from early readers through high school, based on individual learning plans.
- Prepare for each instructional session using Sylvan program materials.
- Build students' confidence through positive reinforcement and encouragement.
- Differentiate instruction to meet each student's learning style and academic needs.
- Evaluate student progress and document instructional notes after each session.
- Motivate students using Sylvan's token reward system.
- Communicate student progress and instructional needs with Center Staff.
- Maintain a safe, positive, and engaging learning environment.
- Participate in staff meetings, ongoing training, and Sylvan certification for assigned programs.
Required
- Bachelor's degree (or upper-level coursework toward a bachelor's degree)
- Strong English Language Arts skills, including:
- Reading
- Writing
- Grammar
- Reading comprehension
- Vocabulary
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to build rapport with students of varying ages and abilities
Preferred
- Previous classroom teaching or tutoring experience
- Experience teaching Reading and Writing to elementary, middle, or high school students
- SAT Reading/Writing experience (or willingness to complete Sylvan training)
- Experience working with students with ADHD, dyslexia, executive functioning challenges, or other learning differences
- Comfortable using iPads and educational technology
Pay: $19.00 - $23.00 per hour
