Are you a detail-oriented accounting professional with strong customer service skills and collections experience? We're seeking a Collections Specialist to join our team and play a key role in managing student receivables, ensuring compliance, and supporting financial operations.
What You'll Do
- Manage and analyze student receivable accounts to ensure accuracy and timely resolution
- Communicate with customers regarding outstanding balances, payment options, and account status
- Review and monitor workflow completed by accounting clerks and cashiers for accuracy and compliance
- Prepare and submit aged receivable accounts to the State of Maryland Central Collection Unit (CCU)
- Investigate discrepancies and initiate authorized account adjustments
- Prepare documentation for referral to collection agencies when necessary
- Represent the organization in court proceedings as needed
- Maintain accurate records in accounts receivable systems and ensure audit trail integrity
- Support compliance with State, federal, and institutional financial policies
- Strong knowledge of bookkeeping, accounting procedures, and financial recordkeeping
- Experience analyzing accounts and resolving discrepancies
- Ability to interpret and apply State regulations and institutional policies
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
- Experience supervising or leading accounting-clerical staff
- Professionalism and discretion when handling sensitive financial information
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Four (4) years of progressively responsible accounting-clerical experience
- At least three (3) years performing bookkeeping and/or accounting duties
- Supervisory or lead responsibility over two or more accounting-clerical employees
- Minimum two (2) years of customer service experience
- Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or related field
- Prior collections experience
- Experience working with the State of Maryland Central Collection Unit (CCU)
