What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Coder Level 1 position at Sweetwater Hospital Association?
POSITION: Medical Coder
HOURS: Full-Time
Examples of Duties:
- Provides good lines of communication with Medical Staff
- Assists physicians in clarifying coding versus clinical issues as necessary.
- Appropriately utilizes the DRG calculation system to assign the appropriate DRG and provide appropriate code sequencing. Cross reference manually as indicated.
- Codes clinical information from medical records and emergency room records.
- Accurately abstracts clinical information from the medical record and assigns the appropriate ICD-10-CM code in accordance with coding and reimbursement guidelines.
- Appropriately utilizes the coding clinic standards in the proper selection and assignment of the principal diagnosis, principal procedure, complications and co-morbid conditions and significant procedures.
- Maintains a minimum coding accuracy consistent with internal reimbursement expectations.
Job Qualifications:
Education: A.A.S. Degree in Health Information Technology or completion of the Independent Study Module through the American Health Information Management Association or B.S. in Health Information Management. Other education as required for Licensure held if other than RHIT or RHIA.
Coders: CCS, CCS-P preferred
Experience: Experience preferred but will provide on-the-job training.
