DIRECTOR OF MED SURG/IMU- FULL TIME

Summary/Objective:

The Director of the Medical Surgical Department’s (Med Surg) and Intermediate Care Unit (IMU) primary purpose is to provide direct and indirect provisions of professional nursing care to patients and accountability for all nursing functions in Med Surg. The Director of Med Surg will also provide leadership, 24/7 management accountability and assist in promoting evidence-based leadership practices at SCH.  In addition, they will lead initiatives to foster a patient/family centered environment and transform care delivery.

Essential Functions:

1. Supports and leads to accomplish mission, vision, and core values of the organization.
2. Promotes an environment that supports best nursing practices and fosters transformation of bedside nursing.
3. Provides leadership for the unit.
4. Contributes to team efforts and uses appropriate conflict management skills proactively to resolve intradepartmental and interdepartmental grievances/concerns.
5. Selects, hires, and trains departmental staff; leading orientations of new department Team Members.
6. Develops standards of performance, monitors and supervises Team Members.
7. Evaluates staff performance and makes recommendations for merit increases, promotions, and disciplinary action as applicable.
8. Provides fiscal management by developing and recommending department operating budget as instructed and insures compliance. Evaluates and justifies equipment and supply needs.
9. Organizes regular staff meetings for the purpose of communicating new policies, procedures, equipment, unit and organizational concerns.
10. Directs the day-to-day function of Med Surg/ IMU in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern these areas.
11. Ensures that safety and sanitation standards are maintained in patient’s rooms, all work areas, and throughout the unit.
12. Follows established hand washing techniques and universal precautions in the use of gloves, gowns, and/or masks.
13. Participates in the development, maintenance, and implementation of the hospital’s quality assurance program in Med Surg / IMU.
14. Ensures that all Med Surg/ IMU  Team Members comply with the written policies and procedures established by the facility.
15. Annually, and as necessary, reviews the department’s policies, procedure manuals, job descriptions, and makes revisions as needed.
16. Participates in multiple organizational-wide and community-based committees as necessary and requested 
17. Rounds to ensure that Med Surg / IMU Team Members perform their work assignments in accordance with acceptable nursing standards.
18. Ensures Med Surg / IMU Team Members, patients, and visitors always follow the department’s established policies and procedures.
19. Creates and maintains an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the unit and shift.
20. Reviews complaints and grievances made or filed by Med Surg / IMU Team Members.
21. Exhibits flexibility and capability to complete Team Member responsibilities as needed.
22. Facilitates Nursing education.
23. Exhibits flexibility to assist the Med Surg / IMU in times of increased patient load, disaster and/or short staff.
24. Works beyond normal working hours, and in other staff positions temporarily, when necessary.
25. Subject to callback during emergency conditions (mass traumas, evacuation, disaster, etc.)
26. Attends and participates in continuing education programs.

1. Ability to function as a liaison by connecting the dots of communication between the physician, the patient, their family, support departments, etc., to adequately plan for the patient’s care.
2. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
3. Exhibits basic computer skills.
4. Possesses the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such actions.
5. Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with Team Members, patients, family members, visitors, government agencies, and the general public.
6. Knowledgeable of nursing practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to hospital setting.
7. Exhibits leadership and supervisory abilities and the willingness to work collaboratively with other Team Members.
8. Plans, organizes, develops, implements, and interprets programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
9. Exhibits an energetic disposition with the ability to also be calming and comforting with patients whether difficult or not.
10. Willingness to seek out new methods and principles that will help improve patient care and be willing to incorporate them into existing nursing practices.
11. Ability to communicate information concerning a patient’s condition.

Supervisory Responsibility:

Supervises Med Surg Nursing Team Members

Work Environment:

This job will require exposure to blood and body fluids. Routine hazards and risk involve in performing nursing and other clinical activities, including potential exposure to infectious processes, potential exposure to hazardous substances, and potential musculoskeletal injuries. This job is an OSHA Blood Born Risk category II.

1. Subject to frequent interruptions.
2. Involved with patients, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc. under all circumstances and conditions.
3. Exposed to hostile and emotionally unstable patients, families, Team Members, and visitors.
4. Communicates with medical staff, department staff, and other departments.
5. Exposed to equipment, odors, etc., throughout the workday, as well as reactions from dust, disinfectants, tobacco smoke, and other contaminants.

7. Demonstrates the ability to work with patients in the group specific to the environment of care as necessary.

 Depending on the environment of care, the following age groups are considered:

This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, fax machines, and other equipment as needed.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described as follows are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

This position requires continuous physical activity, endurance, ability regularly standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, pushing, pulling and crouching as well as lifting and/or moving up to 50 lbs.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position, salaried position, and core hours of work are Monday through Friday 8 hours per day with overtime as needed.  Position requires work schedule flexibility based on needs of the facility.

TRAVEL

Occasional travel is expected for this position due to continuing education.

Required Education, Experience and License

1. Bachelors Degree
2. Current, unencumbered, active license to practice as an RN in Texas.

Preferred Education, Experience and License

1. At least 3 years of Med Surg / IMU nursing experience and/or managerial experience
2. BLS
3. ACLS
