What are the responsibilities and job description for the Litigation Paralegal position at Sweeney Merrigan Personal Injury Lawyers?
Sweeney Merrigan Law seeks a tenacious, perceptive Paralegal to join our Litigation Team.
At Sweeney Merrigan, one of Boston’s leading personal injury law firms, we pride ourselves on giving our clients only the highest quality of service, care, and professionalism as we fight to get them the compensation they deserve. Our office is a low-ego environment where we support one another and strive for excellence as a group. As a Paralegal on our Litigation Team, you will support our attorneys and assist in all phases of litigation — from early case workup through discovery, preparation for trial or settlement, and resolution. While you will assist with substantive legal work (document preparation, litigation support, discovery, trial prep), you will also have case-management responsibilities: organizing files, tracking deadlines, and communicating with clients, medical providers, and insurers as needed.
Responsibilities
- Assist attorneys in all phases of the litigation process — from case intake through trial or settlement.
- Conduct factual investigations: interview clients and witnesses; gather and organize records, evidence, medical records, billing statements, correspondence, etc.
- Perform legal research on case law, statutes, regulations, and procedural rules to support case strategies.
- Draft and prepare legal documents and correspondence under attorney supervision — e.g. pleadings, motions, discovery requests/responses, affidavits, subpoenas, settlement demand packages, correspondence with medical providers or insurers.
- Organize and maintain case files, evidence, exhibits, discovery materials, billing records, medical records, correspondence, and any relevant documentation (both physical and electronic).
- Manage case calendars — track key deadlines, court filings, discovery windows, depositions, hearings, and other important milestones to ensure compliance with procedural requirements.
- Assist with discovery: coordinate requests for records, gather responses, review documents, create summary logs, organize exhibits for depositions or trial.
- Assist with trial preparation: prepare exhibits, organize trial binders, coordinate witness appearances, assist attorneys during trial or hearings as needed.
- Act as point of contact between clients, medical providers, insurers, and other third parties — communicate updates, gather needed documents (e.g. medical bills or records), coordinate treatment check-ins or follow-ups, handle billing and billing-related correspondence when relevant.
- Support settlement process: assist in drafting demand packages, summarize medical records and bills, assist in settlement negotiations or communications under attorney supervision, coordinate release of settlement funds, manage lien requests or billing coordination as needed.
- Provide excellent client service: respond to client inquiries, keep clients updated on case status, facilitate clear communication between clients and the firm’s litigation team.
Qualifications (Required)
- Exceptional organizational skills — ability to manage multiple cases/files, track deadlines, maintain order among documents and communications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfort with frequent telephone and email contact with clients, medical providers, insurers, and third parties.
- Ability to manage large volumes of medical bills, provider bills, and balances — including persistence and follow-through when contacting providers who may be difficult to reach, sometimes requiring repeated attempts.
- Comfort and confidence being on the phone for much of the workday.
- Ability to be appropriately assertive when needed (e.g. dealing with medical billing reps or insurance companies), while maintaining professionalism and client-focused demeanor.
- Excellent client-service attitude — someone humble, hungry to learn and grow, people-smart, team-oriented, and committed to supporting both clients and colleagues.
- Openness to learning, adaptability, and willingness to take direction and grow skills.
- Experience with drafting legal correspondence or documents, case management, and strong customer service orientation to keep clients engaged and informed.
Qualifications (Preferred)
- 1-3 years of experience working as a paralegal or legal assistant — ideally in a contingency-based law or personal injury firm (or similar litigation environment) where case management and client coordination are regularly required.
- Familiarity with litigation procedure, civil procedure rules, discovery practices, court filing practices (state and/or federal), and medical-bill coordination common to personal injury cases.
- Experience using legal research tools, case management software, and document management systems.
- Experience organizing and managing discovery, medical records, billing records, exhibits, and coordinating with medical providers, insurers, lien holders, and clients.
