JOB DESCRIPTION
Glendale Sawmill

Position Title: Taper, Log Yard Utility
Reports to: Log Yard Supervisor
Department: Log Yard
Hours per shift: Employee will work 9-10 hour shifts (6:00am/7:00am-4:30pm/3:30pm), Monday – Friday, with two/three 10-minute breaks and a 30-minute unpaid lunch.

Wage: Level 1
Position Purpose: Assist scalers in processing incoming logs by measuring and marking (spray paint) log length. Train on Log Yard and mill equipment
Position Functions: Assist scalers in processing incoming logs by measuring log length and marking (spray paint) log length. Measure logs, be a back-up for the weighmaster. Train on how to operate Log Yard and Mill equipment
Essential Functions*
These duties are designated as ADA Essential Functions and must be performed in this job.

Measure log lengths. Requires frequent squatting, bending, and reaching out/down to measure each log. Spray paint log length on log for use by scaler.

Learn to weigh incoming log trucks/do paper work to assist scales personnel when time allows and to fill in when needed: Vacations, lunches, breaks, etc.

Put water hose/pipe on the log decks to irrigate during the summer.

Drive water truck to water the log yard when dusty.

Drive tub truck/operate bark bin to haul bark to the boiler

Train on log yard equipment (Loader, Shovel and bucket machine)

Train on log processing equipment (Barker, Bucksaws & Vat Loader)

Other duties as assigned.

Non-Essential Functions
These duties are secondary in nature and are not classified as ADA essential.

Use chainsaw to trim oversized “butt-swelled” logs and to cut out sections of logs containing metal.

Clean up around log yard and log processing areas

Working Environment: (1) Inside 10%, average temperature 60 degrees, extreme low temperature 10 degrees F, extreme high temperature 105 degrees F. (2) Outside 90%. Noise or vibration: Machine noise to include machine being operated as well as other machines close by including Forklifts, Loaders, trucks, etc. Hazards: See Job Hazard Analysis. (3) Atmospheric conditions: Heavy dust and/or rain Odors: Dry/green wood, Gasses: None, Poor Ventilation: None.

Personal Protective Equipment Required: (1) Eye Protection. (2) Approved Footwear. (3) Cork boots when walking on log decks. (4) Safety Vest

Physical Demands: See the attached Job/Task Evaluation and Physical Capabilities portion; this position requires constant use of hearing and vision, frequent bending, twisting, pushing/pulling and reaching, and occasional lifting/carrying

Skills: (1) must have excellent hand eye coordination. Use vision/hearing continuously and must have peripheral vision to see the loaders/shovels, and co-workers. Reading and speech required to communicate comprehension of Job Hazard Analysis, monthly safety training, etc. Worker generally works with another taper with little supervision. Tapers must be self-directed in identifying and efficiently completing each task. Ability to prioritize, organize, and make necessary decisions

Safety: * (1)* Do only maintenance you are trained to do and keep all body parts out of machinery. (2) Always use our 14 step lockout/tagout procedure before doing any maintenance, clearing jams, or getting into machinery for any reason; be aware of stored energy. (3) Always use proper body mechanics (ex: don’t over reach, get help as needed to push loads out). (4) Use proper PPE (gloves, eye protection, hearing protection). (5) Be aware of and communicate with your co-worker at all times (ex: forklift driver). (6) Will be required to read and write during safety training.
