Electrician 

 

12 month non-exempt position

 

Reports to Maintenance Supervisor

 

Purpose

The employee will install and repair electrical wiring, systems, and fixtures in buildings. Install conduits and pipes to house electrical wires and cables. Ensures piping complies with electrical codes. Installs circuit breakers and other electrical hardware and connects wiring to them. This employee will serve as the technical expert in all aspects of electrical service. This employee will provide oversight of all electrical installations and modifications throughout the district. Work is performed independently under general supervision.

 

Essential Job Functions

  • Supervises duties related to the installation, alteration, repair, replacement and maintenance of electrical systems, conductors, and associated materials and equipment. 
  • Construct, modify, or repair electrical circuits and systems as required.
  • Troubleshoot and repair complex problems to determine parts needed and work procedures
  • Analyze electrical systems, requirements, and recommend new systems or modifications as needed.
  • Research new equipment or procedures for possible adoption and use.
  • Read blueprints and diagrams.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

 

Applicants must have:

  • Considerable knowledge of electrical theory, practices, tools, and materials used in electrical systems (installation, maintenance, and repair)
  • Skill in the safe use and care of electrical tools and equipment
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical problems and identify solutions
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, and electrical codes (National Electrical Code)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with school staff and administration
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently to meet deadlines
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to safety
  • Knowledge of fire alarm systems, communication systems, and low-voltage systems (security systems)



Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

  • Physical ability to lift/carry 20-50 lbs
  • Ability to withstand heights and work in crawl spaces.
  • Typical risks associated with using tools of the trade.
  • Occasional strenuous physical work.
  • Occasional work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.

 

Safety Requirements

  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment used.
  • Wears appropriate safety gear
  • Frequent travel between schools, or between schools and central offices required.


Qualifications

  • Valid North Carolina driver's license required. 
  • Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance. 
  • Licensed Electrical Contractor, preferred not required
  • Journeyman Electrician license in the NC, preferred not required
    • Working for a licensed electrical contractor for a 4 years
    • Passing a journeyman electrician licensing exam
    • Renewing the license annually, potentially with continuing education requirements

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:   12-month non-exempt position, salary in accordance with the NC state salary schedule (NC08-NC09) based on experience, knowledge, and skills with a starting salary of $37,776.00.
