Position Summary

 

The Director of Transportation & Safety is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable transportation of students, while also overseeing comprehensive school safety initiatives and emergency management planning. This position develops and implements policies and programs that protect students, staff, and property, and ensures compliance with all relevant regulations. The Director collaborates with district leadership, school administrators, law enforcement, and community partners to foster a safe learning environment and effective emergency preparedness.

Key Responsibilities

Student Transportation Oversight

  • Direct all student transportation operations, including route planning, scheduling, fleet management, and driver supervision, ensuring safe and timely student travel.
  • Establish and enforce transportation policies and procedures that prioritize student safety and well-being.
  • Oversee vehicle maintenance and inspection programs to ensure all buses and vehicles meet safety standards.
  • Manage transportation staff, providing training and professional development focused on student supervision and safety.

School Safety Leadership

  • Develop, implement, and monitor district-wide safety initiatives, including visitor management, and campus security protocols.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments of school facilities and transportation operations.
  • Coordinate safety drills (fire, lockdown, evacuation, severe weather) in collaboration with school administrators and local emergency responders.
  • Collaborate with the SCS tech department to facilitate the implementation of security technologies (e.g., cameras, access control) and promote a positive culture of safety across all schools.

Emergency Management & Crisis Response

  • Serve as the district’s lead for emergency management, developing and updating comprehensive emergency operations plans (EOPs) in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Coordinate training for staff and students on emergency procedures, including crisis communication, reunification, and incident command systems.
  • Act as the district liaison with law enforcement, fire departments, EMS, and other agencies during emergencies and drills.
  • Oversee the district’s response to incidents, ensuring timely communication with families, staff, and the community.

Compliance & Collaboration

  • Ensure district compliance with all transportation, safety, and emergency management regulations (e.g., DOT, OSHA, state education codes).
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare required reports for district leadership and regulatory agencies.
  • Collaborate with district and school leadership to align safety and transportation initiatives with educational goals and student needs.
  • Engage families and community stakeholders in safety awareness and emergency preparedness efforts.

Budget & Resource Management

  • Collaborate with the CFO to ensure strict budgetary regulation.
  • Identify and pursue grant opportunities and partnerships to enhance district safety and transportation resources.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education Administration, Transportation Management, Safety, Emergency Management, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in school or departmental supervision.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of student transportation operations, school safety best practices, and emergency preparedness.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working with school-aged children and diverse communities.

Terms

  • 12-Month Exempt Position
  • Salary placement will align with the NC State Salary Schedules based upon certifications and experience.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Office-based with frequent travel to schools and transportation facilities.
  • Must be available to respond to emergencies or incidents outside normal hours.
  • Occasional evening and weekend work required.
