JOB SUMMARY

Sutter County is currently seeking candidates for a Public Safety Dispatcher III /Supervising Public Safety Dispatcher.

Salary: $62,732.80 - $90,105.60 Annually

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Public Safety Dispatcher III:
Knowledge of: Policies and procedures utilized in dispatching units to emergencies and other calls; Sheriff's Department office procedures; modern office practices and procedures including filing and record keeping methods; clerical activities related to an organization's programs and operations; basic mathematics; standard office equipment; radio communications equipment and radio codes used in public safety work; and local road system and geographical layout; and basic computer applications and techniques.

Ability to: Interpret and apply policies and procedures to emergency situations; operate radio equipment quickly and calmly in routine and emergency situations; work under pressure; understand, retain, and transmit data while performing several functions at one time; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; establish and maintain effective working relationships with department staff, various public agencies, the general public, and others contacted in the course of work; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; prepare and maintain accurate reports and records; perform clerical work of average difficulty; operate communications equipment and standard office equipment; communicates effectively and coherently over radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications; type at 30 words per minute; operate a computer keyboard accurately and with appropriate speed; and utilize various software programs relevant to the position.

Education and Experience: One year of experience performing as a Public Safety Dispatcher II in Sutter County, or two years of experience which would demonstrate possession of the knowledge and abilities, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Supervising Public Safety Dispatcher
Knowledge of: Policies, procedures, techniques and methods utilized in the operation of a public safety communications center; applicable laws and regulations governing public safety and radio communications; laws and regulations involving access to criminal information and other confidential information needed for emergencies; State of California 911 guidelines and operation procedures; computer assisted dispatch hardware and software; radio communications and dispatch equipment; radio communications codes used in public safety work; principles of supervision and training; modern office practices and procedures including filing and record keeping methods; clerical activities related to an organization's programs and operations; basic mathematics; standard office equipment; and basic computer applications and techniques.

Ability to: Plan, organize, direct and evaluate the work of Public Safety Dispatchers; interpret and apply policies and procedures to emergency situations; learn local road system and geographical layout; operate radio communications equipment and utilize radio codes used in public safety work; analyze situations using good judgment and take appropriate and effective action; react quickly, calmly and effectively in emergency or stressful situations; make decisions accurately and rapidly; understand, retain, and transmit data while performing several functions at one time; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, department staff, various public agencies, the general public, and others contacted in the course of work; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; prepare and maintain accurate reports and records; perform clerical work of average difficulty; operate standard office equipment; type at 40 words per minute; operate a computer keyboard accurately and with appropriate speed; operate a computer aided dispatch (CAD) computer system; and utilize various software programs relevant to the position.

Education and Experience: Two years of experience performing as a Public Safety Dispatcher II in Sutter County, or three years of experience which would demonstrate possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Essential Duties require the following physical skills and work requirements:
Ability to operate communications equipment by performing multiple hand and foot functions simultaneously; remain calm in emergencies; understand, retain, and transmit data while performing several functions at one time; analyze situations accurately and take effective action; must have normal hearing in both ears; requires sufficient hand/eye coordination to perform semi-skilled repetitive movements, such as typing and data entry. May require the possession and maintenance of a valid California Driver's license.


Public Safety Dispatcher III:

License or Certificate:P.O.S.T. certified 120-hour Basic Complaint/Dispatcher course within twelve months of the date of hire.

Supervising Public Safety Dispatcher
License or Certificate: P.O.S.T. certified 120-hours Basic Complaint/Dispatcher course, thorough background investigation, and evaluation of oral communication skills.

Recruitment Process
The recruitment process for this position includes completing an application, successfully providing a valid typing test at 30 W.P.M. (net); successful participation in the POST Dispatcher test and Prevue Assessment inventory; participating in oral interview(s) and for some positions, successfully passing a bilingual examination or sign language examination.
