Chief Operating Officer (Portland Law Firm)

Sussman Shank is seeking an experienced Chief Operating Officer (COO) to lead the firm’s business operations and support continued growth, operational excellence, and a strong workplace culture. The COO will serve as a strategic partner to the Managing Partner, Management Committee, and firm leadership by developing and implementing business strategies, optimizing operations, and ensuring the firm has the infrastructure and resources necessary to deliver exceptional client service.

The COO will oversee key administrative functions, including finance, human resources, technology, marketing, facilities, and support services, while leading a team of department directors and fostering collaboration across the firm.

Key Responsibilities

• Partner with firm leadership on strategic planning, business initiatives, and operational priorities.
• Oversee day-to-day business operations and administrative functions.
• Provide financial analysis, budgeting support, and operational reporting to firm leadership.
• Lead human resources initiatives, including recruiting, compensation, benefits, employee relations, and organizational development.
• Support attorney and practice group needs through effective resource planning, workflow improvements, and operational solutions.
• Oversee technology, cybersecurity, facilities, risk management, and vendor relationships.
• Collaborate with marketing and business development leadership to support firm growth and reputation-building initiatives.
• Promote effective communication, employee engagement, and a positive, high-performing workplace culture.

Qualifications

• Significant leadership experience in law firm administration, professional services, or a similarly complex organization.
• Strong background in operations, financial management, strategic planning, and organizational leadership.
• Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with senior executives and professional teams.
• Experience leading cross-functional teams and managing multiple business functions.
• Excellent communication, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills.
