JOB TITLE: Gifted/English Learner Coach


This position will utilize current strategies and theories to plan, organize and implement instructional strategies for gifted and talented students. The Gifted/English Learner Coach supports the coaching framework in conjunction with the EL teacher by providing ESL related coaching at the district and building level and is responsible for ensuring compliance with State and Federal English learner regulations and district-mandated policies. 


Reports to: Director of Student Support Services


Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)

  • Master’s degree or higher with appropriate certification for teaching assignment
  • Endorsement in Gifted and English as a Second Language
  • Virginia Department of Education Teaching license with an endorsement in Gifted Education and English Learner
  • At least three (3) years of successful classroom teaching experience,
  • Demonstrated ability to differentiate content, process, product, and learning environment and to apply best practices in gifted education and English Language proficiency
  • Demonstrated ability to scaffold instruction for potentially gifted learners
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school-based staff, students, parents and community
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the methodology for effective teaching of talented and gifted students
  • Strong organizational skills, strategic planning skills, and efficiency in meeting deadlines
  • Ability to create and align project or problem-based learning scenarios to mandated curriculum  
  • Demonstrated experience using assessment results and data to shape instruction for higher order learning
  • Strong interpersonal skills to provide advice and coaching
  • Demonstrated ability to use web-based technology in the classroom and to disseminate information through maintenance of a web site, or willingness to learn


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Facilitate universal data screening 2-3 times a year with school administrators, specialists, and/or teacher teams to screen for potential giftedness,

  • Conduct all parts of the gifted identification process (screening, referral, testing and scoring, eligibility, and determination notification),

  • Disaggregate data from gifted referral and testing as part of equitable practices monitoring,
  • Communicate with families about gifted programming and conduct parent outreach on occasion,
  • Facilitate processes for additional programs related to the Gifted and Talent Development Program (ex. Camp Launch at W&M, Governor’s School, etc.),
  • Teach identified gifted and potentially gifted students in their assigned grade level(s),
  • Monitor and report on gifted student progress,

  • Provide staff with information on testing, referrals, student issues, etc.,
  • Provide facilitative support to small dynamic professional learning communities throughout the system focusing on meeting the needs of talented and gifted, K-12,
  • Instruct students through lectures, discussions, visual aids, and other effective teaching methods for student comprehension and work in collaboration with teachers to ensure talent development strategies are created and implemented for high able learners,
  • Provide ongoing professional development for teachers in regards to modifying for advanced learners,
  • Administer and/or supports state and local testing processes and policies,
  • Serves as a support to the referral and identification process of gifted students and works in collaboration with teachers and counselors to ensure accuracy of students’ information coding and tagging for funding purposes,
  • Serves as a resource in identifying appropriate instructional strategies and interventions to improve student achievement for all students including English Learners,
  • Meets regularly with the principal and Director of Pupil Personnel to review District/site-required assessment for English learners,
  • Assist school sites with the administration and accountability of English Language Proficiency Assessments (WIDA),
  • Supports the development and maintenance of ESL resources as needed,
  • Conducts monthly uploads/downloads and creates pivot tables to verify EL status and accuracy of records and updates student database and State Information System (SIS) records when required,
  • Supports district wide ACCESS testing,
  • Analyzes ACCESS data by school and grade,
  • Assists in yearly program evaluation,
  • Develops strong relationships with administrators, teachers, and other coaches,
  • Attends professional development provided by the district,
  • Completes professional development necessary to maintain certifications,
  • Assist with maintaining Title III funds,
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Terms of

Employment:               8 hours per day; 11 months

 

Evaluation:                   The performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the

                                        provisions of the Sussex County School Board’s policy manual.
