Art Teacher

(Supporting Both the Middle and High School) 


Reports To:                        Principal of Middle and High School

Work Schedule:                10 Months-200 Days



Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instructional Planning and Curriculum Implementation

  • Assume professional responsibility for the order, progress, and supervision of assigned middle and high school art classes.
  • Develop and implement standards-based lesson plans aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning and curriculum for Visual Arts.
  • Design differentiated instruction to meet the developmental, academic, and artistic needs of both middle and high school students.
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate expectations effectively to students.
  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of art history, art criticism, aesthetics, and studio production across a variety of media (e.g., drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, digital art, mixed media).
  • Incorporate a range of instructional strategies, critique models, and technology tools to foster creativity, critical thinking, and artistic skill development.
  • Prepare instructional materials and provide written evidence of preparation upon request.

 

Middle School Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement engaging visual arts lessons aligned to state and district standards.
  • Develop and use rubrics and assessments to monitor student progress.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and families.
  • Maintain a safe and organized classroom environment.
  • Establish clear procedures for material use, safety, and cleanup.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including English learners, gifted students, and students with disabilities.
  • Incorporate appropriate instructional technology and digital tools.
  • Organize and support student art displays and exhibitions.
  • Prepare and execute art exhibitions and parental involvement activities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and participate in professional development.
  • Maintain accurate records in accordance with school and district policies.

 

High School Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced instruction that builds technical proficiency, conceptual thinking, and portfolio development.
  • Support students in preparing portfolios for advanced coursework, college admissions, competitions, or exhibitions where applicable.
  • Guide students in developing independent artistic voice and critical analysis skills.
  • Provide opportunities for in-depth critique, reflection, and revision.



Studio Environment and Safety

  • Create and maintain safe, organized, and visually engaging studio environments at both school sites.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior and studio procedures appropriate to each age group.
  • Ensure safe handling, storage, and supervision of art materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Take all reasonable precautions to protect students, materials, equipment, and facilities.
  • Supervise instructional assistants, volunteers, and substitute teachers as assigned.



Assessment and Student Growth

  • Evaluate student artistic growth using clear rubrics and performance-based assessments aligned with stated objectives.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to support artistic and academic development.
  • Maintain accurate records of grades, inventories, and required documentation in accordance with division policy.
  • Diagnose instructional needs and collaborate with specialists when appropriate.
  • Administer assessments in accordance with division testing programs where applicable.



Program Development and Community Engagement

  • Select, requisition, and maintain art supplies and equipment at both school locations.
  • Display student artwork in school and community settings to celebrate achievement.
  • Support school-wide art events, exhibitions, and showcases as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with middle and high school faculty to promote cross-curricular connections.



Professional Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, flexibility, and effective time management in a split-campus assignment.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, administrators, and community members at both schools.
  • Attend required meetings, serve on committees, and participate in professional development activities.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with division policies and administrative directives.
  • Remain reasonably available to students and parents outside the instructional day as required.
  • Continue professional growth by staying current with trends in art education and instructional technology.

 

Additional Duties

Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Salary : $52,500
