SCRAP YARD WORKER / SORTER
Position Summary
The Scrap Yard Worker/Sorter is responsible for safely sorting, processing, and preparing recyclable metals for purchase or shipment. This includes identifying different metal types, operating basic equipment, assisting customers, and maintaining a clean, safe yard environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Greet customers unloading materials and provide direction as needed.
- Sort, separate, and grade incoming materials (ferrous, non-ferrous, aluminum, copper, brass, stainless, etc.).
- Operate basic equipment such as forklifts, skid steers, shears, saws, balers, magnets, or torches (depending on training).
- Assist in loading/unloading materials for customers or outbound shipments.
- Maintain clean work areas and follow proper environmental disposal procedures.
- Identify contaminants or restricted items (propane tanks, batteries, hazardous materials).
- Follow all safety guidelines, including PPE requirements.
- Communicate with scale/cashier personnel about weights and material types.
- Perform regular equipment inspections and report maintenance issues.
- Support yard organization, stacking, bin cleaning, and metal storage.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Strong physical stamina; ability to lift 50–75 lbs regularly.
- Ability to identify metal types or willingness to learn.
- Strong attention to detail and safety awareness.
- Forklift or heavy equipment experience is a plus (not required).
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work in a fast-paced environment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work around heavy equipment, dust, noise, and uneven surfaces.
- Frequent walking, bending, lifting, pushing, and pulling.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
Expected hours: 30 – 40 per week
