Position Summary
The Scrap Yard Cashier is responsible for processing all customer transactions accurately and efficiently, ensuring compliance with state scrap-metal purchase laws, maintaining detailed records, and providing excellent customer service. This role also assists with administrative tasks, data entry, and maintaining a clean, organized front office.
Key Responsibilities
- Greet customers and provide clear instructions for unloading, weighing, and material separation.
- Operate the scale system and cash register to record incoming/outgoing materials.
- Verify customer identification and ensure all documentation meets state and local compliance requirements.
- Handle cash, checks, and electronic payments accurately.
- Enter material types, weights, and pricing into the POS/system.
- Issue purchase tickets, receipts, and end-of-day reports.
- Maintain organized records for audits and regulatory checks.
- Answer phone calls, schedule drop-offs/pickups, and provide pricing information within company guidelines.
- Keep the cashier station clean and organized.
- Assist management in maintaining updated pricing sheets and signage.
- Report suspicious transactions, theft attempts, or safety concerns.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic computer skills; ability to learn industry-specific software.
- Comfortable handling cash accurately.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to follow regulations.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, loud, and outdoor-adjacent environment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit/stand for extended periods.
- Ability to walk out into the yard when needed.
- Must be comfortable working around heavy equipment and noisy environment.
Experience
- Prior experience in retail sales or cashiering roles is preferred but not required; we value enthusiasm and a willingness to learn!
- Familiarity with POS systems and basic retail math is advantageous for efficient transaction processing.
- Bilingual skills are a plus, enabling us to serve a diverse customer base effectively.
- Strong communication skills are essential for providing excellent customer service and working collaboratively with team members.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining professionalism and attention to detail is crucial.
