What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research And Development Engineer position at Suru?
R&D Engineer (Catheter Devices)
Job Description
We are seeking an R&D Engineer to support the research, design exploration, feasibility testing, and early-stage development of innovative catheter-based medical devices. This role focuses on hands-on experimentation, prototyping, and iterative design work while partnering with cross-functional teams to mature concepts into robust, manufacturable solutions.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with catheter product experience who enjoys technical problem-solving, building and evaluating prototypes, and contributing to the foundational work that shapes new device platforms. More senior candidates may be considered for expanded scope and leadership responsibilities.
Day-to-Day
R&D Exploration & Concept Development
- Participate in early-stage R&D activities for new catheter technologies and system architectures.
- Explore design concepts through rapid prototyping, feasibility builds, and iteration loops.
- Apply catheter-specific engineering methods such as extrusion, thermal bonding, braid/coil reinforcement, reflow, and component integration.
Experimental Testing & Data-Driven Iteration
- Conduct bench testing, characterization studies, and performance experiments to evaluate design ideas.
- Analyze test outcomes, summarize findings, and translate results into actionable design recommendations.
- Identify technical risks and propose mitigation strategies based on data and engineering insight.
Prototype Builds & Hands-On Engineering
- Build and refine prototype catheter assemblies using R&D fabrication techniques.
- Troubleshoot mechanical performance issues, material interactions, and assembly methods.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external suppliers to procure prototype components and tooling.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with manufacturing, process development, and quality engineering to ensure designs are on a path toward manufacturability and regulatory readiness.
- Provide R&D support during design transfer activities, including clarifying requirements, refining specifications, and supporting early pilot builds.
- Work closely with program managers to align technical work with program needs, timelines, and milestones.
Documentation, Design Controls & Technical Rigor
- Create and maintain R&D documentation including test methods, engineering reports, design rationale summaries, and prototype build records.
- Support risk assessments (pFMEA, design-level risk inputs) and contribute to verification/validation planning as designs mature.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives across the R&D organization, including test method refinement, equipment capability expansion, and knowledge-sharing.
Requirements / Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical discipline.
- 3–5 years of experience working with catheter-based medical devices in an R&D or product development environment.
- Hands-on experience with catheter technologies such as extrusion, reflow, thermal bonding, braiding, coil/wire reinforcement, or catheter assembly processes.
- Strong experimental and prototyping skills with the ability to design, build, test, and iterate rapidly.
- Familiarity with design controls, design documentation, and early-phase V&V preparation.
- Excellent analytical, communication, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
