Surgical Scrub Technician

As a Surgical Scrub Technician, you will support a variety of outpatient surgical procedures in a fast‑paced, team‑oriented environment. Ortho with Mako experience preferred.

Position Summary

The Surgical Scrub Technician assists the surgeon and surgical team during operative and invasive procedures by preparing and maintaining the sterile field, passing instruments, and anticipating the needs of the surgeon. The tech ensures the operating room is adequately prepared for each procedure, helps monitor par levels of surgical instruments and supplies, and supports cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization processes. The role also includes participation in departmental staff meetings and Quality Management & Improvement activities; SPD experience is preferred.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepare the operating room for procedures, ensuring all instruments, equipment, and supplies are available, functional, and sterile.
• Establish and maintain the sterile field; perform surgical counts according to facility policy.
• Assist the surgeon and circulating staff by passing instruments, sutures, implants, and supplies in a safe and efficient manner.
• Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and procedure, ensuring smooth workflow and minimal case delays.
• Handle specimens safely and accurately according to policy.
• Assist with room turnover between cases, including cleaning, restocking, and preparing equipment.
• Monitor and maintain par levels of surgical instruments, disposables, and specialty items; notify appropriate staff of shortages or issues.
• Participate in decontamination and sterilization of instruments and trays; follow infection prevention and SPD standards.
• Support quality, safety, and performance‑improvement initiatives within the department.
• Communicate effectively and professionally with surgeons, anesthesia providers, nurses, and other team members.
• Adhere to all facility policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.

Education, Experience, and Certifications

Required:

• High school diploma or GED.
• Completion of an accredited surgical scrub technician/technologist course.
• Operating room experience (minimum 1 year).
• Current CPR/BLS certification.
• Strong ethical and moral character references.

Preferred:

• Two years of previous operating room experience.
• Prior experience in an ambulatory surgery center (ASC).
• Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or equivalent national certification.
• Total joint, pain management(injections), spine, podiatry, cataract experience

Environmental and Working Conditions

• Works in a well‑lighted, ventilated surgical environment with both non‑hazardous and hazardous equipment.
• Category I position with occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids and materials.
• Regular use of personal protective equipment and adherence to infection‑control policies.

Physical Demands

• Ability to stand for long periods and walk throughout the day.
• Capability for occasional overhead and low reaching, bending, and positioning.
• Physical strength sufficient for lifting, pushing, and positioning equipment and assisting with patient care activities.
• Visual and auditory acuity sufficient for timely response, safe instrument handling, and patient/environment assessment.
• Ability to move quickly in response to changing patient or procedural needs.
• Ability to make frequent judgments and respond appropriately to routine problems, as well as occasional emergencies, disasters, or drills.
