POSITION DESCRIPTION: INSTRUMENT/STERILE PROCESSING EYE CENTER
RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintains established standards of care, policies, goals and objectives in administrating care to all patients while performing as a CS technician; must understand principals of aseptic technique, sterilization techniques and surgical instrumentation and equipment.
SUPERVISED BY: Clinical Coordinator, Chief Nursing Officer
QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED equivalency. Previous experience in a Central Sterile environment is preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be flexible in hours worked; must be able to endure long periods of standing or sitting and walking; frequent bending and stooping, lifting and transporting of patients and operating room supplies. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity; must be able to distinguish letters or symbols with normal vision range. May be exposed to communicable diseases and/or exposed to minimal amounts of radiation. Work area is well lighted and well ventilated; contact with staff and patients required.
MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT USED: Must be accomplished in the use of all equipment and materials required for processing instrumentation. Must have knowledge of basic principles of aseptic techniques, sterilization techniques, surgical instrumentation and equipment.

1. Supports and implements the philosophy of the Surgery Center of Huntsville.
2. Assists physicians and other staff members in carrying out the established standards of care.
3. Fosters appropriate public relations with physicians, patients, family, and visitors who visit The Center.
4. Promotes harmonious relationships with all areas in The Center by cooperating with their policies and procedures.
5. Maintains communication with superiors and other personnel working in The Center so that an efficient working relationship is maintained at all times.
6. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of technical methodology and legal aspects through independent study, in-service programs and seminars; strives for self improvement.
7. Seeks ways to improve quality of care in the Center by: a) continuous self evaluation of the effectiveness of patient care; b) observing and assisting with care given by other personnel as needed.
8. Knowledgeable of the changes and/or additions to procedures and policies; implements accordingly.
9. Assumes responsibility for promoting a safe and clean work environment by: a) reporting equipment malfunction, maintenance needs, and supply requests to supervisor; b) being responsible for knowledge of fire, evacuation, disaster plans, and OSHA regulations as they relate to work; c) implementing appropriate safety precautions; d) packaging and sterilizing all instrumentation; e) washing, decontaminating all surgical instrumentation; f) terminally sterilizing all trays and instruments; g) performing biological monitoring.
10. Supports staff development programs through participation.
11. Participates in committee assignments as requested.
12. Accepts the responsibility for making suggestions and sharing knowledge to promote efficient working conditions and quality patient care.
13. Works productively to promote team efforts in cost awareness and containment, supply conservation, protection of physical plant and property, equipment, resupply, and stocks area to maintain a state of readiness.
14. Remains flexible with all duties and able to move to any area or department and perform duties as assigned within the educational work experience limitations.
15. Additional duties expected to perform as an Instrument Technician for the Center.
