We’re hiring Surf Instructors to lead surf lessons, camps, and clinics at La Jolla Shores.
You’ll be responsible for delivering safe, structured, and fun surf experiences for guests of all ages—while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and ocean safety.

Responsibilities
- Lead engaging surf lessons, camps, and clinics tailored to participants’ skill levels, teaching all ages, levels and abilities
- Ensure safety protocols are strictly followed during all water activities, including monitoring weather and ocean conditions, group management and adherence to regulations and best practices
- Provide clear instruction on surfing techniques, wave etiquette, and ocean safety practices
- Assist with equipment setup and breakdown, maintenance, and proper storage to ensure optimal performance and safety
- Foster a positive environment by encouraging teamwork, good behavior, and confidence among students
- Conduct pre-lesson briefings and post-lesson feedback to promote continuous improvement
- Support additional water-based activities such as swimming or beach games to enhance participant experience
- Communicate professionally with clients, families, and team members
* Cross Training: Surf Instructors will also be cross trained to lead Snorkel Tours and Stand Up Paddle Lessons to support additional ocean programs, expanding your skill set and hours.
Qualifications
- Surfing experience and strong ocean experience
- Proven lifeguard experience or certification demonstrating water safety expertise (or willing to obtain water safety or lifeguard certification- this is a requirement of all instructors)
- First aid and CPR certification (or willing to obtain - this is a requirement of all instructors)
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to instruct diverse groups of learners of all ages
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond swiftly during emergencies
Preferred
- Previous surf instruction experience
- Strong background in sports coaching, teaching, or physical education, especially in water sports or martial arts such as Karate or Judo
- Experience working with children and managing behavior effectively in active environments
- Background in outdoor education or youth programs
- Skills in swimming, climbing, cheerleading, basketball or other sports that promote agility and physical fitness
- Knowledge of fitness fundamentals
