About the Role
We are looking for a highly skilled and strategic Controller to lead the financial operations of our growing civil construction company. This individual will oversee all accounting functions, implement strong financial controls, provide accurate and timely reporting, and support leadership with data-driven insights. The ideal candidate has deep knowledge of construction accounting, strong analytical skills, and experience managing complex project-based financial environments.
Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Management & Reporting
- Oversee all daily accounting operations including AP, AR, payroll, billing, job costing, and general ledger.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements with accuracy and timeliness.
- Lead budgeting and forecasting processes, providing variance analysis and actionable recommendations.
- Manage cash flow, banking relationships, credit lines, and financial risk assessments.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and industry-specific accounting standards.
Construction Accounting
- Maintain and improve systems for job cost tracking, project profitability, and work-in-progress (WIP) reporting.
- Oversee contract billing, including progress billings, T&M, unit price, and retention tracking.
- Manage certified payroll, prevailing wage documentation, and lien releases when applicable.
- Support project managers with financial reporting, budgets, and cost control tools.
- Coordinate with estimators and operations on budget development and cost analysis.
Controls, Compliance & Audit
- Develop and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures.
- Coordinate year-end audits, tax filings, and external financial reviews.
- Ensure adherence to federal, state, and local regulations specific to construction, including insurance audits, workers’ comp, and bonding compliance.
- Oversee financial components of safety, equipment, and asset management records.
Leadership & Team Management
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff, promoting accuracy, accountability, and professional growth.
- Collaborate closely with operations, HR, and executive leadership to ensure seamless financial integration across departments.
- Drive continuous improvement in financial systems, processes, and reporting.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or CMA strongly preferred.
- 5 years of progressive accounting experience; at least 3 years in construction industry accounting.
- Proficiency with construction accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks Enterprise Contractor Online, Sage 100/300 CRE, Viewpoint Vista, Foundation).
- Strong understanding of job costing, WIP schedules, and construction billing methods.
- Demonstrated experience managing audits, compliance, and financial controls.
- Exceptional analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to translate financial data into actionable insight for non-financial stakeholders.
- Proven leadership experience managing an accounting or finance team.
