HIPPY Home Based Educator

POSITION TITLE:  HIPPY Home Based Educator (HBE)

The implementation of the HIPPY model is centered on the recruitment, training, and professional development of parents as home based educators (HBEs) from the immediate community. These HBEs provide the family home or virtual instruction and are the key to the direct success of our HIPPY program.

REPORTS TO:  HIPPY Coordinator

REQUIREMENTS:  

1. Be a well-functioning individual showing maturity and understanding of her/his community.
2. Identify with the local population and be able to work comfortably with parents in their homes.
3. Show potential leadership, with good oral expression, appropriate reading skills, and good writing ability. 
4. Have an understanding of computer skills, use virtual communication and online formats, and submit information by required deadlines. 
5. Current credential requirements are:

•       Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education
•       CDA Certificate (can obtain the first year as HBE provided by WDMESC)
•       A higher degree with 12 college hours in Early Childhood
•       A staff member may be required to work under an approved Staff Qualifications          Plan

     6.  Current professional development requirements are:
          Pre-K Ella; CDELS; Index: Math and Science or EDELS; Social Emotional Learning;              COPA, and 30 hours of staff development in Early Childhood each year.  *Provided                by WDMESC.

     7.  Must submit any/all documentation requested by ABC (Arkansas Better Chance),                  WDMESC, and(or) your local school district. This includes, but is not limited to:                    transcripts, diploma, Educator’s License, background check, immunization records,              registration with the Maltreatment Center Registry, valid driver’s license, social                    security card, PDR Registration.

      8. Must attend any other training, workshop, or conference required by the local                     district, WDMESC, Arkansas HIPPY, Arkansas Better Chance, or HIPPY USA.
 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

A home-based educator meets with each parent in the home/virtual weekly, or as assigned by the coordinator.   There will also be 6 group meetings during the year that together the home-based educators will plan for their families to attend.  

In addition, the Home-based educator:

1. Obtains all student documentation or pending documentation.
2. Reviews the activity packets from the previous week & discusses any issues the parent may have encountered while working with the child for possible solutions and suggestions.
3. Instructs the parent in the next week’s material, provides the family with current program information and provides the family with enrichment activities for the child.
4. Meets weekly with the coordinator to report on each family’s progress, discuss and receive the next week’s materials, submit all required paperwork, and update all required computer data.
5. Keeps records of all home visits and group meetings and submits them to the coordinator, recruits and screens students, inputs computer information online (currently COPA), and submits all required information weekly to the field coordinator.
6. With supervision from the Field Coordinator, the HBE will evaluate the children twice yearly, and conduct a parent/teacher conference twice yearly.
7. Communicates any concerns to the coordinator for further discussion/action.          
8. The HBE is a “paraprofessional” type position.  Each school district determines the salary schedule and any benefits applicable to the position.   The HBE position is contracted for 160 days.
