What are the responsibilities and job description for the Heavy Equipment Mechanic Apprentice position at SUPERIOR PAVING CORP.?
This position provides hands-on training and exposure to equipment maintenance, diagnostics, and repair within our shop operations. Under the guidance of experienced technicians, the Apprentice will learn how to safely inspect, maintain, and repair company equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist Shop Technicians with daily maintenance and repair tasks on equipment and vehicles.
- Learn to perform routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and basic repairs.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop environment.
- Follow all safety procedures and company guidelines.
- Support parts inventory, tool organization, and shop upkeep.
- Observe and learn troubleshooting and diagnostic processes.
- Complete assigned training and demonstrate skill progression over time.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support shop operations.
Job Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Interest in mechanics, equipment, or hands-on work.
- Willingness to learn how to repair off-road equipment like pavers, rollers, brooms, milling machines, and more.
- Willingness to learn and take direction from experienced team members.
- Basic mechanical knowledge or experience (preferred but not required).
- Ability to read, write, and speak English.
- Ability to learn to operate a variety of hand tools, power tools, diagnostic tools, cranes, grease guns, welders, and cutting tools.
- Ability to learn current systems used by Superior to log time, order parts, and to perform other tasks.
- Able to work outside in all weather conditions around shops, crews, and plants.
- Ability to work as a member of a team.
- Self-motivated and able to work under pressure.
- Ability to adhere to Superior policies and other safety regulations.
- Ability to read, follow and interpret safety documents, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to work overtime, weekends, and nights as required.
- Must be 18 years of age.
Physical Demands
The position requires the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds safely and on your own; stand, walk, bend, kneel, and preform repetitive motions for extended periods; tolerate noise, vibration; demonstrate the manual dexterity needed to use hand tools and equipment; and maintain good eye-hand coordination, physical fitness, multi-limb coordination, static strength, and balance.

Vehicle and field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, fumes, vibrations; temperature variations and inclement weather conditions; work around heavy construction equipment. Work on uneven or wet surfaces.
Tools and equipment regularly used; computer, hand, air, and power tools including drills, hammers, torches, welders, cutting tools, grinder, pressure washer, A/C machine, lift, and a variety of shop and hand tools, etc.
