Job Summary

The selected individual will teach sophomore-level, technical courses supporting an entry-level career in forestry, natural resources and/or land surveying. Subjects taught will include outdoor recreation resources and environmental interpretation, and may also include courses such as tool use and safety, dendrology, water and soil resources, or other courses in The Ranger School curricula. The successful candidate will be assigned courses with consideration of their own expertise and that of other Ranger School faculty. All courses include both lecture and lab components, and incorporate outdoor field exercises. This individual will also provide academic advisement, supervise students and support student activities, and may assist with other courses as needed. All faculty members are expected to hold office hours at least one evening per week. Other responsibilities include participating in service at the College, Department, and Ranger School levels, attending regular faculty meetings, supporting program assessment, and engaging in ongoing program and campus-based planning and improvement. Ranger School faculty are expected to develop excellence in teaching, engage in continued professional development, and work effectively as a member of a faculty team to continually update and improve the content and delivery of the Ranger School programs.

Required Qualifications:

  • This position requires either:
    • Bachelor's degree in forestry, outdoor recreation, natural resources, or a closely related field, plus at least two years of relevant field-based work experience; OR
    • Bachelor's degree in a non-related field of study plus at least four years of relevant field-based work experience. An Associate's degree in forestry, outdoor recreation, natural resources, or a closely related field may substitute for up to two years of relevant, field-based work experience for applicants with a non-related Bachelor's degree.
  • Valid New York State driver's license or ability to acquire such

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in outdoor recreation, environmental interpretation, trail-building, or related topics
  • Teaching experience, especially the incorporation of field-based problem-solving or other experiential learning techniques
  • Demonstrated experience in forestry and/or natural resources management
  • Experience in northeastern USA forest types

About the College of Environmental Science and Forestry Ranger School:

ESF is a specialized college within the 64-campus SUNY system, and the Ranger School is a regional campus of ESF where the College's Associate degree programs are delivered. With an annual enrollment of 50-60 students living in residence during the academic year, a close-knit community of learners, faculty, and staff work together to accomplish a field-intensive learning experience. Ranger School education occurs on the 2,800-acre Dubuar Memorial Forest and adjacent state preserve lands. Located inside the Adirondack Park, numerous opportunities exist for experiential coursework, research, and public outreach.

Located in southern St. Lawrence County, Wanakena is a small community of less than 100 year-round residents and a vibrant summer community of several hundred, located on the upper reaches of Cranberry Lake at the mouth of the Oswegatchie River. Cultural events occur throughout the summer at Wanakena's Z-Park, and Otto's Abode offers fresh produce and other groceries, camping supplies, and other needs. Wanakena is located midway between the larger towns of Star Lake and Cranberry Lake, with access to medical services, fire and emergency services, gas and convenience stores. Larger towns including access to grocery stores, big box stores, university services and more are within a 1.5 hour drive of Wanakena.
