The Veterinary Science Technology Program at SUNY Delhi is a nationally recognized, AVMA-accredited program with extensive teaching laboratories, animal care facilities, and hands-on learning environments. The Instructional Support Associate (ISA) plays an essential role in supporting instruction, student learning, animal care operations, and laboratory management within the department.
This position works closely with faculty, staff, veterinarians, and students to support daily teaching activities, maintain high standards of animal husbandry and welfare, and ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory guidelines.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist faculty with instructional laboratories, demonstrations, and hands-on student training activities
- Observe, mentor, and assist students in the development of appropriate technical and animal handling skills
- Provide daily husbandry and medical care for companion animals, laboratory animals, and teaching animals used within the program
- Support the operation, care, maintenance, and organization of the vivarium and teaching facilities
- Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and compliant laboratory and animal care environment
- Monitor animal health and communicate concerns with veterinarians, faculty, and facility management as appropriate
- Assist with animal restraint, handling, enrichment, sanitation, feeding, medication administration, and routine treatments
- Participate in accepted student days, laboratory demonstrations, and student engagement activities
- Assist with necropsy specimen care, disposal of specimens/carcasses, and preparation of diagnostic samples for laboratory submission
- Assist with purchasing, procurement, inventory management, and receiving of supplies and equipment needed to support the Veterinary Science Technology Program
- Maintain pharmacy supplies and assist with inventory tracking and organization
- Assist with facility inspections, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and compliance with USDA, OSHA, IACUC, and institutional guidelines
- Assist in the operation and maintenance of department equipment and report repair or maintenance concerns
- Support scheduling and coordination of instructional support activities and animal care coverage
- Perform intake and discharge procedures for shelter, rescue, or community-owned animals utilized within the program
- Participate in departmental, divisional, and campus committee work as assigned
- Support program accreditation efforts, campus initiatives, and departmental projects
- Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and campus partners to promote a positive teaching and learning environment
Job Requirements:
- Graduate of an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technology program
- Current Veterinary Technician license/credential (LVT, CVT, or RVT), or ability to obtain NY licensure within 6 months of employment
- Minimum of three years of veterinary practice, laboratory animal, research, or teaching support experience
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students in an educational environment
- Commitment to animal welfare, student success, and teamwork
Preferred Qualifications
- AALAS certification (ALAT, LAT, or LATG), or willingness to obtain certification within 3 months of hire
- Experience working with laboratory animal species, including rodents and/or primates
- Teaching, mentoring, or instructional support experience
- Familiarity with USDA regulations, IACUC guidelines, and laboratory animal compliance standards
- Experience with animal husbandry practices and veterinary facility operations
Additional Information:
- Salary: $45,000
- Full-time, 12-month position
- Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required to support animal care and program operations
- Reports to the Facility Manager
