Broad Function

Develop the overall vision and oversee all Dwyer program functions and operations in Warren and Washington Counties. Responsible for the development and implementation of all program activities. The goal of the program is to link veterans, service members and their families together through peer-to-peer collaborative services, social activities and community. The program is also focused on peer-to-peer and other mental health supports for veterans experiencing the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The Director is responsible for maintaining grant compliance including budget planning, Warren and Washington county program functions, program performance reporting, program effectiveness and oversight of peer mentors.

This position is fully-funded by a grant from the NY State Senate funds administered by Warren and Washington counties. Continued employment is contingent upon the receipt of grant funds.

Major Responsibilities

Provides leadership, supervision and direction to the Dwyer personnel. Direct and supervise all program functions and staff. Plan and direct the work flow by assigning tasks in order to meet program objectives and outcomes. The Project Director will develop program priorities, review and manage the overall program goals and implement activities in order to assure that New York State Senate and sponsoring county guidelines and directives are followed.

  • Design, implement and manage a comprehensive veteran peer support program that address the diverse needs of the veteran community in Warren and Washington Counties including students who are veterans enrolled at SUNY Adirondack
  • Responsible for the recruitment and engagement of program participants and veteran support volunteers. Direct outreach efforts to area veteran service agencies, county veteran service officers, NYS Division of Veterans Affairs Veterans Benefits Advisor and other staff in order to engage veteran participants. Develop individual service plans to meet the needs of program participants. Identify area stakeholders to serve on the Dwyer Advisory Board.
  • Assist SUNY Adirondack students who are veterans with accessing campus and community services, and navigating financial aid programs and veterans benefits that support college attendance. Make appropriate referrals to NYS Department of Veterans Services and County Veterans’ Services personnel related to educational benefits, and other onboarding processes particular to veteran enrollment at SUNY ADK.
  • Oversee the Randles Veterans Resource Center at SUNY ADK (including the Battle Buddy Center) and facilitate the Veterans Club on campus.
  • Assume responsibility for participant tracking and assessment of outcomes. Develop and administer an appropriate tracking system designed to record and assess the needs of participants as well as to analyze participation and engagement with program activities. Maintain tracking system for participants who complete the program and move on to other educational and/or career pursuits.
  • Plans, conducts, and coordinates staff and participant development trainings.
  • Develop policies in compliance with College, NY Senate and County guidelines to assure fiscal health.
  • Assist in the development of program marketing efforts.
  • Select Peer Mentor staff, Veteran Support volunteers, and other program staff.
  • Assist in the selection of curriculum and counseling materials that support program activities.
  • Provide individual, career, group, wellness and educational counseling services to participants.
  • Meet with community groups and stakeholders to generate support for program objectives. Chair the Dwyer Advisory Board.
  • Attend appropriate national, state, or local conferences and training consistent with program planning and/or objectives.
  • Participate in college activities or committees as are appropriate for program goals and consistent with Dwyer policies.
  • Prepare reports and complete special assignments, as required.
  • Other duties as assigned by the President

Required Skills

Experience in supervising personnel and managing budgets. Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of veterans’ lived experiences and appropriate engagement activities and support systems. Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Educational Requirements

Bachelor degree required. Master degree preferred.

Years of Experience
2-5 years of experience in the administration of programs serving veterans.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
Office environment. Occasional lifting of 5lb-10lb. Some evening and weekend hours are required.

Salary Range

$26.40- $29.70 per hour
The selected candidate’s salary will be determined based on factors that include the available budget, internal equity, and the final candidate’s qualifications, experience, education and other job-related credentials. This hiring range is provided as SUNY Adirondack’s good faith estimate of the expected hiring range at the time of posting.
