Patient Care Attendant (PCA)

Job Summary

The Patient Care Attendant (PCA) provides non-medical personal care and support services to clients in their homes or care settings. The PCA assists with activities of daily living, promotes client independence, ensures a safe and comfortable environment, and provides companionship. This position does not include medication administration, clinical care, or taking vital signs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist clients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and personal hygiene.

  • Assist with mobility, ambulation, transfers, and positioning as needed.

  • Prepare and serve meals and assist with feeding when necessary.

  • Perform light housekeeping duties, including laundry, dishwashing, changing linens, and maintaining a clean living environment.

  • Provide companionship and emotional support to clients.

  • Accompany clients to appointments, errands, social activities, and community outings as authorized.

  • Provide medication reminders in accordance with agency policy. Medication administration is not permitted.

  • Observe and report changes in client condition, behavior, or living environment to the supervisor.

  • Assist with shopping, meal planning, and other household tasks.

  • Complete required documentation accurately and timely.

  • Follow all agency policies, safety procedures, and confidentiality requirements.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

  • Current Patient Care Attendant (PCA) Certificate required.

Experience

  • Previous experience providing personal care services to seniors, individuals with disabilities, or other clients requiring assistance preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to provide compassionate, respectful, and client-focused care.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.

  • Dependable, organized, and able to work independently.

  • Ability to follow care plans and supervisor instructions.

  • Knowledge of personal care, safety, and infection control practices.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, and lift as necessary to assist clients safely.

  • Ability to perform personal care and household support tasks.

  • Ability to accompany clients in community settings when required.

Work Environment

  • Client homes

  • Assisted living facilities

  • Residential care settings

  • Community-based programs
