Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Controls Engineer to design, develop, and improve advanced industrial equipment and automation systems. This role will focus on integrating controls, robotics, automation, and electro-mechanical technologies into new and existing products.

The Senior Controls Engineer will be responsible for controls engineering, PLC/HMI programming, CAD modeling and design, prototype development, factory testing, product launches, and continuous process improvement. The position will collaborate closely with engineering, manufacturing, sales, product management, and field service teams to deliver innovative, reliable, and manufacturable solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop specialized industrial equipment utilizing advanced mechanical, electrical, controls, automation, and robotics technologies.
  • Program and configure Allen-Bradley PLCs and HMIs using Rockwell Automation software.
  • Develop modular, scalable, and standardized electrical hardware, mechanical components, and software solutions to improve product quality and reduce time-to-market.
  • Create and maintain detailed 3D CAD designs and models using Autodesk Inventor and Vault.
  • Support prototype development, product launches, factory testing, troubleshooting, and design validation.
  • Serve as the primary controls and instrumentation resource for custom-engineered solutions.
  • Integrate electro-mechanical designs and manufacturing requirements into ERP systems and production workflows.
  • Conduct and facilitate Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to identify and resolve manufacturing, assembly, material flow, capacity, and process-related issues.
  • Develop process documentation, engineering standards, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Train field service technicians on controls and automation systems to ensure proper equipment operation, startup, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts effectively to employees across engineering, manufacturing, service, sales, and other organizational levels.
  • Support the development of mechanical engineering capabilities, including structural design, power transmission, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA).
  • Collaborate with engineering and sales teams to evaluate and resolve complex technical challenges.
  • Independently manage assigned projects, priorities, schedules, and department performance metrics.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify, standardize, automate, and improve engineering and manufacturing processes.
  • Apply strong problem-solving and analytical skills to identify root causes and implement sustainable solutions.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Travel domestically up to approximately 10% as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably in Mechatronics, Automation & Controls, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 3 years of experience with both electrical and mechanical engineering applications preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation controls and programming.
  • Proficiency with PLC and HMI programming and configuration.
  • Experience working with industrial equipment, automation, and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and industrial ventilation systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, production drawings, schematics, and equipment manuals.
  • Experience with CAD design and 3D modeling.
  • Strong troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a cross-functional, team-oriented environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Rockwell Automation software, including:
  • Connected Components Workbench
  • Studio 5000 Logix Designer
  • Studio 5000 View Designer
  • FactoryTalk View Studio
  • Familiarity with PlantPAx or Machine Builder Libraries.
  • Experience with FANUC robotics.
  • Experience with Kinetix 5500 servo drives and automation systems.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Inventor, Vault, AutoCAD, and AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Familiarity with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
  • Exposure to Lean manufacturing/business systems.
