Job Summary
Solar Technician 2 will perform service and maintenance on residential photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage systems (BESS), including preventive and corrective troubleshooting to diagnose and resolve issues. They will document findings to support warranty claims and MSA-related service tickets, ensuring compliance with system performance and Sunspear Energy quality standards. This progressive role emphasizes hands-on residential work, with exposure to commercial-scale sites through assisting in troubleshooting, diagnostics, and O&M activities such as IV-curve tracing, ground fault identification, and AC/DC voltage testing.

The ideal candidate is a hardworking and adaptable professional with experience in using multimeters for electrical testing, including AC/DC voltage and amperage. They should also possess knowledge or hands-on experience with microinverter and DC string inverter systems, as well as the ability to work semi-independently, guide entry-level team members, and collaborate to advance projects.This role requires direct customer interaction, so a friendly and positive attitude is essential for delivering exceptional solar experiences.

Responsibilities:

Site Survey

  • Complete residential site inspections, which include documenting the site with panoramic photos and wide-angle photos, using any technology tools requested, such as Augmented Reality equipment layout tools to create equipment installation visualizations and more
  • Create drone maps of project sites and upload drone maps to the data server
  • Access rooftops as needed by ladder to verify roof conditions, document with photos, and physically measure dimensions as needed.
  • Be able to effectively and succinctly communicate with customers during the initial face-to-face greeting and/or on the phone or text.
  • Document the project site with photos using company-provided devices and upload them to the company server and project management software, proactively moving projects to the next stage following a site inspection.
  • Communicate with the Design and Engineering team to ensure quality and an explicit understanding of information that is obtained and provided to the next stage for the completion of the system design: Quality In, Quality Out.

System Commissioning, Troubleshooting & Project Closeout

  • Complete commissioning steps required to activate residential energy systems, including Tesla, SolarEdge, Enphase, Franklin, EP Cube, and any or all PV systems.
  • Working with electricians and roofers to ensure systems are ready to be easily commissioned.
  • Access/document electrical distribution panels and other solar electric equipment.
  • Remove/add breakers and production CTs in the main service panel and distribution panels.
  • Perform procedure development and best practices for safety and quality.
  • Complete on-site diagnosis of systems.
  • Use phone-based applications to perform real-time site reports.
  • Document time and workflow with schedulers and managers.
  • After construction, provide support as required to create as-built drawings and procure and install placards for on-site labeling.
  • Collect photos of the equipment program settings for HECO and AHJs to ensure quick closeout of PV installations.
  • Upload site maps to online portals for all monitoring systems, including but not limited to Enphase, SolarEdge, SunPower, etc.
  • Handle the submission and replacement of RMA processes for defective components.
  • Any other project engineering required items to ensure the success of a construction project.
  • Assist in developing and documenting industry best practices, standards, and guidelines.
  • Utilize software systems to record progress of various tasks.
  • Organizing photos and documentation in data servers and operational CRMs.
  • Travel to outer islands for PV-related work.
  • Respond and troubleshoot corrective maintenance cases on residential solar PV, energy storage systems, and update online case logs accurately.
  • Perform required preventive maintenance activities on solar inverters & battery systems to maintain warranty coverage.
  • Service issues that arise from modules, inverters, monitoring, battery storage, and balance of system components, including autonomously handling RMA warranty submissions, returns, and follow-ups for approval on defective components.
  • Complete Field Service Requests and submit associated documentation.
  • Participate in regular meetings/provide feedback/contribute to Root Cause Corrective Actions.
  • If required, manage your personal calendar and schedule prioritizing Commissioning and basic Maintenance in conjunction with the needs of the department as directed by the Service and Operations Team or other project stakeholders.

  • Work to meet and exceed design Key Performance Indicators (KPI) including, but not limited to, quality, output, cycle time, and difficulty.
  • Participate in training modules, including but not limited to Span, Tesla, SolarEdge, Franklin, EP Cube, and more, to ensure constant learning goals to increase the solar knowledge base.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma
  • Demonstrate good judgment and analytical skills
  • Willingness to ask questions when needed, a humble mindset
  • Strong attention to detail, collaboration skills, and safety awareness.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to effectively communicate with engineering, construction, and customer-facing teams
  • Must be able to work at heights, including on rooftops, climbing ladders, and stairs
  • At times, to verify field conditions, must be able to work in extreme environments (hot sun, cold, crawl spaces, attic, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree
  • OSHA 30 Certification
  • Technical knowledge of solar system installations
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 and other software tools
  • Critical thinking and ability to solve problems
  • Understand how to interpret one-line and three-line electrical diagrams
  • 2 years of experience in the solar industry
  • Experience in roof flashing types (including metal, concrete tile, clay tile, comp, shingle, or wood shake)
  • Experience with CRM software tools
  • NABCEP certification

Driving Requirement:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license in the state where the work is to be performed.
  • Ability to drive a vehicle during the normal course of business.
  • Must maintain a clean driving record with the ability to pass a driving background check.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to traverse/maneuver job site and survey/assess all aspects of the construction process for extended periods of time
  • Ability to climb a ladder onto a roof, walk across a roof, and install equipment to roof safely
  • Work in outdoor conditions: inclement weather, heat and humidity, cold and freezing temperatures, and exposure to poisonous plants, insects, and allergens
  • May be exposed to energized electrical equipment/construction chemicals and will be required to take appropriate precautions.
  • Employee may handle work equipment and be required to lift, move and install materials up to 50 pounds
  • Noise level is moderate but varies depending on location
  • Able to use and learn standard construction equipment/technology with proficiency
  • Typical work hours are M-F in 8-hour shifts, potential weekends
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and own a registered insured personal vehicle to travel between job sites – no use of motorcycles or scooters during business hours
  • Visual acuity to drive motor vehicles/mobile equipment/read printed and electronic documents
  • Hearing capacity to receive, perceive, and react to common driving/construction environment noises
  • Visual acuity to distinguish wiring colors
  • Hearing capacity to receive, perceive, and react to verbal commands/warnings
