Environmental Analyst – Metal Section
Department: Orange County Utilities Central
Laboratory
General Overview
This position focuses on conducting chemical and/or
microbiological analyses related to metals in environmental samples. The role
ensures testing adheres to strict quality assurance (QA) and quality
control (QC) standards. Work is performed under general supervision, and
performance is measured through data integrity, compliance, and annual
objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Sample Analysis & Data Handling
- Conducts
physical and chemical testing of environmental samples.
- Prepares
and digests samples following EPA methods.
- Records
and manages data using the Laboratory Information Management System
(LIMS).
Instrumentation & Equipment
- Operates
and maintains complex analytical instruments, such as:
- ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma)
- ICP-MS (Mass Spectrometry)
- GFAA (Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption)
- CVAAS (Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy)
- CVAFS (Cold Vapor Atomic Fluorescence Spectroscopy)
- Colorimetric
Spectrophotometers
- Block
Digestors for EPA digestion methods
Quality Assurance
- Ensures
all QA/QC standards are consistently met.
- Participates
in internal audits to verify SOP compliance.
- Performs
specialized, non-routine analyses when needed.
Team Collaboration
- Works
with QA/QC staff and other lab personnel to ensure laboratory integrity.
- Supports
special projects or additional assignments as required.
Ideal Candidate Should Have
- Strong
understanding of analytical chemistry, especially metal analysis.
- Hands-on
experience with advanced instrumentation.
- Familiarity
with EPA methods, digestion protocols, and spectroscopy
techniques.
- Ability
to follow SOPs, handle data responsibly, and maintain accurate
records.
