Qualifications:
To work as a Direct Support Professional, you must have a strong interest in supporting others and show compassion and empathy. Reliability and consistency is essential to excelling as a DSP.
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Driver’s License, good driving record and Auto Insurance
- 18 years or older
- Pass criminal background, drug screen and physical
- Able to lift 50 lbs.
- Prior Direct Support Professional experience preferred
Job Details:
- Provide and help individuals participate in various activities that are appropriate for the individual.
- Assist in planning activities for individuals.
- Organize materials needed to implement activities, setting up beforehand, and clearing away at the end of the activity.
- Ensures that each individual's needs are met, including personal care, mealtime assistance, medication assistance/administration, equipment adaptations and transportation. This may require moving and lifting clients on a regular basis as well as transporting ambulatory and non-ambulatory clients to and from activities within the base facility, throughout the base facility campus, and in the community. This will also require frequent bending, kneeling, stooping and crouching to assist with daily living needs as well as the ability to physically assist in any situation where a client may require emergency care such as CPR/First Aide or emergency evacuation.
- May be required to physically intervene to maintain safety with individuals who exhibit physical aggression toward themselves or others.
- Provide any medical care, such as giving medications, suctioning, feedings with G-tubes, and needed, and following appropriate procedures.
- Monitor and ensure the safety of each individual, reporting any problems to the appropriate person, and completing an incident report as needed.
- Document each individual's involvement in activities.
- Communicate with supervisor, manager, residential staff, or others regarding the individual's level of participation.
- Staff Development and Training - Attends and participates in staff meetings, in-service training and share job-related skills
