Manage and develop the Sunset Service Center, an in-house truck and equipment repair facility, ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient operations for diversified logistics and materials company. This position combines hands-on shop management with financial and strategic oversight, including profit and loss (P&L) responsibility, budgeting, cost control, vendor negotiations, KPI tracking, and long-term maintenance planning. The Shop Manager ensures the effective operation, repair, and lifecycle management of all company trucks, trailers, and equipment while leading a high-performing team of shop and warehouse staff.
Responsibilities
Operational & Shop Management:
• Implement and direct policies and procedures for the shop, set priorities, assign work, and establish schedules.
• Oversee P&L performance for shop operations, ensuring revenue goals, cost controls, and profitability targets are met.
• Prepare and manage annual budgets for maintenance, parts, labor, and operational expenses.
• Monitor financial performance against budget, analyzing variances, and implementing corrective actions as needed.
• Track preventive maintenance schedules, ensuring DOT and AVIR compliance.
• Interface with the Logistics team regarding the status of repairs, out-of-service vehicles, and scheduled PMs.
• Recruit, train, and develop qualified mechanics and warehouse staff, fostering a safety-conscious and results-driven culture.
• Maintain a parts inventory and manage procurement processes, ensuring cost efficiency.
• Grow retail shop services for independent motor carriers.
Driver Interaction:
• Coordinate service calls for roadside repairs with vendors and internal staff, including communication with the Logistics and Materials divisions.
• Manage service issues for drivers and independent motor carriers.
• Communicate driver negligence cases to the Logistics and Safety Manager for review.
Procurement/Inventory Management/Warehouse Management:
• Ensure best pricing and cost-effectiveness when purchasing parts and supplies.
• Maintain a parts inventory in an organized and cost-effective manner and develop purchase initiatives or vendor changes for both truck, trailer, and heavy equipment.
• Maintain up-to-date files on all records, work orders, PO’s, invoices, DVIR’s etc.
• Build and maintain vendor relationships, including contract negotiation and warranty processes.
• Manage warehouse staff and operations to support shop and fleet needs.
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Excellent computer skills; proficiency with MS Word, MS Excel, and fleet management systems
- Strong knowledge of OSHA, DOT, EPA, and MSHA compliance requirements
- Advanced knowledge of truck, trailer, and heavy equipment maintenance strategies
- Samsara or similar fleet maintenance systems (a plus)
- 10 years of supervisory experience in fleet maintenance or related field
- Experience with P&L accountability, budgeting, and KPI tracking.
- Ability to inspect vehicles and shop facilities in various environments
