Position Summary
The Plant Utility Person is responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations, maintenance, and housekeeping of asphalt, concrete, or aggregate plants. This role plays a key part in ensuring plant equipment and facilities operate safely and efficiently.
This position requires flexibility to work across multiple plant locations and schedules, including overtime and weekends as needed. Work is performed with general guidance, and the employee is expected to work independently within established procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Follow all company safety policies, MSHA, and OSHA regulations
Maintain a clean and orderly plant environment
Perform general plant housekeeping and cleanup, including:
Using high-pressure hoses
Maintaining drainage systems
Removing debris such as stone, sand, and muck
Inspect plant equipment and report mechanical issues
Operate equipment such as:
Haul Truck
Skid steer
Front-end loader
Dump truck
Sweeper
Assist with maintenance and repairs, including:
Replacing parts and components
Lubricating machinery (bearings, gears, conveyors)
Changing gearbox oils
Identify equipment issues by observing performance and listening for irregular sounds
Assist in assembling, installing, and maintaining:
Pipe systems
Hydraulic and pneumatic systems
Valves, gauges, and regulators
Operate cutting torch and/or welding equipment as needed
Climb stairs and catwalks to perform maintenance tasks
Load and unload materials and supplies
Assist in maintaining maintenance records and reporting completed work
Support team operations and production goals
Perform other duties as assigned
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED preferred but not required
Minimum of one (1) year of related industrial, plant, or mechanical experience preferred
Other combinations of education and experience may be considered
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
Valid North Carolina Driver’s License required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Basic mechanical knowledge and troubleshooting ability
Ability to safely use hand tools and maintenance equipment
Ability to read and follow basic instructions and safety procedures
Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks
Strong attention to safety and detail
Basic computer skills preferred but not required
Work Environment
This role operates in an industrial plant environment with exposure to:
Outdoor weather conditions
Dust, noise, and vibration
Moving mechanical equipment
Climbing stairs, ladders, and catwalks
Physical labor including lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods
