What are the responsibilities and job description for the Truck & Equipment Mechanic position at Sunrise Equipment?
We are looking for an experienced Diesel Mechanic who is comfortable working across a wide range of medium duty trucks. This position goes beyond basic maintenance as you will be handling in-depth diagnostics, major component repair, and complete rebuilds. The right candidate is confident in tackling complex mechanical and electrical issues and takes pride in solving problems others can’t.
· Diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel engines from manufactures including Cummins, Detroit, Paccar (MX engines), International/Navistar, CAT, and other OEM platforms also, including but not limited to gasoline engines.
· Perform complete engine rebuilds: teardowns, inspections, machining coordination, reassembly, and testing.
· Working on fuel systems including high-pressure common rail systems, injectors, pumps, and turbochargers.
· Diagnose and repair aftertreatment/emission systems (DPF, DEF, EGR etc.)
· Service and repair transmissions including Allison, Aisin, Eaton Fuller (manual & automated), and other drivetrain systems.
· Perform clutch replacements, driveline repair, PTO systems, and power transfer diagnostics.
· Troubleshoot and repair suspension systems including leaf spring and air ride, steering components, kingpins, bushings, and alignments.
· Diagnose and repair electrical systems including wiring faults, CAN bus issues, sensors, ECM/PCM troubleshooting, and module programing when applicable.
· Work on hydraulic systems including pumps, valves, cylinders, and auxiliary equipment including bucket truck booms, dump bodies & lift gates.
· Inspect, diagnose, and repair braking system including air brakes, ABS systems, chambers, slack adjusters, and full system failures.
· Service differential, rear ends, gear sets, wheel seals, and axle assemblies.
· Perform cooling system diagnostics (radiators, water pumps, thermostats) and HVAC system repairs
· Conduct preventative maintenance, DOT inspections, and fleet service work.
· Use diagnostic software, scan tools, and manufacture-specific programs to identify and resolve issues
· Accurately document repairs, parts use, and job notes.
Qualifications:
· 5 years of experience as a diesel mechanic (medium/heavy duty preferred)
· Strong understanding of diesel engines, drivetrain, and vehicle systems.
· Proven ability to perform engine rebuilds and major component replacements.
· Experience with electrical diagnostics and use of scan tools/software
· Knowledge of aftertreatment/emissions systems is highly preferred.
· Familiarity with hydraulic and air brake systems
· Must have your own tools
· Valid drivers license (CDL is a big plus)
· Ability to work independently or part of a team
· Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
· Physically capable of lifting, climbing, and working in a shop environment
