LONG TERM CARE STAFF DEVELOPMENT EDUCATOR

CLASS: NON-UNION, EXEMPT

REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF NURSING

JOB SUMMARY

  • The Long Term Care Staff Development Educator is responsible for planning, conducting, and coordinating educational programs for the development and improvement of necessary knowledge and skills for all Long-Term Care LTC) personnel. The Staff Development Educator ensures orientation, certification and in service programs are conducted according to the facility policy and procedure and in compliance with state and federal regulations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Design, evaluate, update, and implement new and current in-service requirements pertaining specifically to the Long-Term Care area by planning, developing, directing, conducting, evaluating, auditing, and coordinating staff training, education, in-service, and orientation using evidence-based research and national standards with; consult with and serve as a resource to ensure quality resident care.
  • Orient nurses and unlicensed staff, train and evaluate annual competencies, provide in-service programs and continuing education, coordinate preceptor programs, and support research/audits and unit-based education and training across all departments. Assist with ongoing educational needs, problem resolutions and health management across the continuum of care.
  • Collaborate with leadership, resident care staff, and unit management in the planning, implementation, and delivery of educational curricula including educating technical and resident care staff in the use of equipment, supplies, and instruments.
  • Provide educational leadership to clinical and non-clinical team, care providers, residents, and families to enhance specialized resident care within established healthcare setting. Serve as a resource to all departments and personnel.
  • Oversee the Relias Training platform and ensure overall compliance and module completion is adhered to and undertake periodic audits to track and trend.
  • Provide and promote a continuous educational environment to staff through clear and effective verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work with all levels of staff in a positive, cheerful, and unbiased fashion.
  • Act as an effective and positive role model for staff, through mentoring and teaching, in an endeavor to achieve optimal staff development and service outcomes by promoting a professional work environment.
  • Participate and serve on various committees, including but not limited to Quality Assurance Performance Improvement (QAPI), Infection Control, Safety Committee.
  • Act as a professional advisor and role model for CNA students, assisting them in their journeys toward becoming successful. Conduct NEW C.N.A orientation.
  • Stay current on practices, trends, technology, and information affecting long term care and Sunny Hill while being fiscally responsible.
  • Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Review, update and preview the orientation process departmentally to ensure consistency and compliance.
  • Maintain and update the staff Education Boards
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Regular, punctual, and predictable attendance required.
  • Develop and maintain a working knowledge of all policies/procedures pertaining to the position, department, and the personnel.
  • Counsels and discipline employees as needed.
  • Participates in on-call management rotation.
  • Perform other duties in support of the department, as assigned

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

  • Works with Department Heads to coordinate educational needs assessment and training as needed
  • Implements recommendations from the QAPI Committee as they relate to educational needs and programs.
  • Makes frequent rounds of the facility to observe employee work practices, identify deficiencies, and personally assess educational needs of staff.
  • Acts as a resource for education and training within the facility.
  • Administers and oversees computer based annual education and C.N.A 12 hour requirement (RELIAS).

EDUCATION

  • Applicants must have a current, unencumbered State of Illinois license along with a minimum of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), preferably a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and 2-5 five years of experience in a clinical setting. Long Term Care experience a plus. Must have current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association for the Healthcare Provider. BLS Instructor Certification a plus.
  • High level computer literacy with Microsoft Office Suite and an ability to learn new programs quickly.
  • Understanding of teaching and learning in the health care environment.
  • Demonstrated clinical experience and teaching and facilitation skills.
  • Effective communication & interpersonal skills with problem solving ability.
  • Maintain an active Nurse license in good standing throughout employment.

  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task several projects.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

  • Long-term care and supervision.
  • Point-Click-Care computer program.
  • Computer applications related to work.

Skills required to:

  • Multiple step calculations using algebraic and geometric principles.
  • Recognition of definitions for difficult or uncommon jargon and technical terms based on context, figure out general underlying principles of advanced procedures and concepts.
  • Write strong, high consistent business communications that are related to overall business functioning.
  • Preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials.
  • Engage in formal one-on-one verbal interactions with company personnel and external customers.
  • Make formal presentations for in-service education.

Ability to:

  • Ability to speak and write in a clear, concise, creative and professional manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with staff, residents and family members.
  • Ability to determine outcome of resident care and staff performance.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite Products (i.e. Excel, Word, etc.)

ADDITIONAL FACTORS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

The working conditions of the job are mainly sedentary in a climate controlled professional office. Infrequent occasional exposure to outdoor elements may be required. Occasional overtime may be required to meet important deadlines. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to frequently stand, talk and hear.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $25.19 - $30.33 per hour
