Job Title: SKI PATROL: Level I Patroller

Rate of Pay: $22.00/hour

Shift: Day shifts: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Night shifts 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM, varies according to weather. Must be available early mornings for control work as needed.

Seasonal, Full-Time available

MUST BE AVAILABLE HOLIDAYS & WEEKENDS

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt/Hourly

 

SUMMARY

Promote general mountain safety by marking boundaries and hazards, participating in avalanche mitigation work, responding to emergencies (medical, search & rescue, weather, etc.), and engaging guests in an informative and pleasant manner. Perform majority of duties on skis.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • First Aid: Administer first aid and transport injured skiers or persons visiting or working at Sundance Ski area. Communicate via 2-way radio regarding accidents and status of first aid.
  • Transport/Evacuation: Properly package patients and transport with the toboggan.
  • Knowledge of helicopter protocols and location of landing zones.
  • Participates with supervised Avalanche reduction work: Mitigates avalanche-prone areas throughout the day during hazardous periods.
  • Proficient at being a 2nd or 3rd on 1 or more control routes.
  • Participates with supervised Explosives work: Exhibits a working knowledge and training of application of explosives in avalanche reduction program.
  • Participates with supervised Avalanche rescue work: Familiar with avalanche rescue procedures as well as the location and inventories of available rescue equipment.
  • Participates in supervised Search and Rescue missions: Carry out search and rescue for persons within and out of bounds of the ski area boundaries.
  • Sweep: Learn and carry out end of day and morning sweep operations.
  • Lift evacuation: Follows lift evacuation procedures and knows location of and use of lift evacuation equipment.
  • Hill safety: Conducts placement and daily maintenance of signs, bamboo, ropes, fences, etc, according to area plan.
  • Also participate in regular sweeps of runs in your assigned complex to identify and remove any problem areas.
  • Accident reporting and investigation: Fill out accident reports completely, correctly, and legibly.
  • Gather supplemental information for accident investigations.
  • Public Relations: Be helpful and courteous to fellow workers and the skiing public.
  • Provide assistance and advice to skiers in a friendly manner.
  • Remain calm and use tact in dealing with emergencies, violations and unusual circumstances.
  • Training: Upgrade and refresh skills yearly.
  • Actively pursue additional personal training (avalanche, medical, SAR, AI, NSP Instructor, etc....).
  • Assists with the training of Ski Patrol.
  • Enforce ski area policies and procedures and update knowledge each year as necessary.
  • Skier safety: Know the skier responsibility code and use it to advise skiers of the established rules of the road.
  • Emphasize that skier safety is our concern.
  • Provide a safe skiing environment by actively warning or removing skiers whose conduct is reckless and a danger to themselves or others.
  • Equipment and building maintenance: Inspect condition of all patrol equipment and keep all patrol facilities clean and in good repair.
  • Ensure aesthetic appeal and cleanliness of the terrain park.
  • Be an Example of safe recreation and skiing practices at all times.



QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be a Candidate for no less than 1 full season.
  • Working knowledge or background with rope systems, anchoring/belaying etc is helpful.
  • Avalanche awareness classes or backcountry experience with avalanches preferred.
  • Advanced to Expert skier capable of performing essential duties and responsibilities on all levels of terrain.
  • Proficient with the day to day operations of ski patrol.
  • Proficient w/ emergency procedures and plans: Avalanche Rescue Plan, Missing Persons, Lift Evacuations, Sundance Emergency Response Plan.
  • Familiar with avalanche control procedures.
  • Proficient at being a 2nd or 3rd on 1 or more control routes.
  • Use of a 2-way radio.
  • Utah State EMTB or higher medical certification, current CPR card.

The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be 21 years old per OSHA for explosives work.
  • Must be an advanced to expert alpine skier with a flexible schedule.
