ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Clinical Apheresis Procedures
- Independently perform therapeutic apheresis procedures, including therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE), red blood cell exchange (RBCX), white blood cell and platelet depletion, and continuous mononuclear cell (CMNC) collections.
- Assess patients prior to treatment and determine clinical suitability to proceed, reporting abnormal findings to the appropriate physician or supervisor.
- Insert peripheral IV catheters and access central venous catheters, ports, and fistulas; perform line care and dressing changes per protocol.
- Monitor patients throughout procedures, including vital signs, laboratory values, electrolyte replacement, and medication administration as ordered.
- Recognize, manage, and document adverse reactions in consultation with physicians, including vasovagal, citrate, and transfusion reactions.

Patient & Caregiver Education
- Educate patients, families, caregivers, and healthcare professionals on apheresis procedures, expectations, and safety considerations.
- Adapt communication style and explanations based on patient population, condition, and care setting.

Documentation & Compliance
- Complete accurate and timely documentation using electronic medical records, procedural flow charts, and quality reporting systems.
- Ensure compliance with FDA, AABB, ASFA, HIPAA, hospital policies, and SunCoast SOPs.
- Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement activities, including data collection and chart audits.
Operational & On-Call Responsibilities
- Participate in scheduled on-call rotation, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Assist with research collections and adhere to protocol-specific SOPs and documentation requirements.
- Collaborate with management and clinical leadership to meet departmental goals and operational needs.
- Ensure all nursing functions remain within the scope of the Florida State Nurse Practice Act.
Additional Responsibilities
- Participate in and support therapeutic phlebotomy and adverse reaction workflows as assigned.
- Assist with training and onboarding of new departmental staff per SOPs.
- Assist with coordination of equipment maintenance, inventory oversight, and supply management.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support SunCoast Blood Centers’ mission, vision, and values.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Registered Nurse (RN) with active, unrestricted licensure in the State of Florida.
- Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Provider certification.
- Central Line Certification (30-hour IV Therapy Certification Course).
Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years of nursing experience in a hospital setting, oncology unit, intensive care unit, or dialysis center.
- Research experience preferred.
Licenses
- Valid Florida Driver’s License and driving record that meets SunCoast Blood Centers’ insurability requirements.
- Reliable transportation.
