Job Description:
Job Duties:
- Perform all duties within the guidelines set forth in the Employee Policies and Procedures Manual.
- Check all fluid levels at the beginning of engine startup for the day; monitor and maintain gauges, fluid levels, and equipment operation throughout the day.
- Maintain awareness of unusual noises or operations and report any exceptions to the foreman.
- Perform light mechanical adjustments and assist mechanics with repairs on assigned equipment. Assist with lubrication and fueling of the paver.
- Set up the paver for operation at the beginning of each job, including adjusting the screed according to asphalt laydown specifications.
- Place and adjust the electric box on the paver as required for proper operation.
- Align the paver to grade and string lines when applicable.
- Monitor the flow of asphalt into the paver hopper and ensure proper operation during paving.
- Operate the paver safely, maintaining awareness of personnel and equipment nearby, and avoid damage to curbs, structures, tools, and other property.
- Clean the paver at the end of each shift.
- Work nights and extended shifts when project schedules require.
- Follow all safety rules and maintain equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Experience & Knowledge:
- Thorough knowledge of asphalt paving operations and equipment setup.
- Ability to read and understand grade specifications and adjust equipment accordingly.
- Basic mechanical skills for minor adjustments and troubleshooting.
- One to three years of experience operating paving equipment preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively with crew members and supervisors.
Knowledge
Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills. Ability to follow instructions, use fixed gauges, and interpret instruments.
Experience
1–3 years operating a paver to achieve desired results across various tasks.
Initiative & Ingenuity
Apply judgment to follow established routines and make minor decisions within standard procedures.
Physical Demand
Ability to climb onto equipment, operate control levers with repetitive hand/wrist motion, and detect pressure sensitivity. Requires clear verbal communication and ability to identify mechanical issues through sound.
Mental & Visual Demand
Continuous attention to detail during repetitive or varied operations. Requires depth perception and wide field of vision.
Responsibility
- Equipment: Prevent damage through proper operation; errors can be costly in repairs and downtime.
- Material: Avoid damage to asphalt during laydown.
- Safety: Constant care to prevent injury to others; accidents could cause severe harm.
- Work of Others: Primarily responsible for own work; occasional guidance to screed operators.
Working Conditions
Exposure to dust, dirt, temperature extremes, and machine noise on a regular basis.
Hazards
Potential for serious injury (loss of limb or eye) if safety protocols are not followed.
