What are the responsibilities and job description for the Unit Manager - Plastic Thermoforming position at Sun America LLC?
The Unit Manager for Thermoforming oversees all aspects of production in our plastic manufacturing operations, ensuring smooth, safe, and efficient performance. This role manages production schedules, optimizes processes, and leads the team to meet production targets while upholding quality standards. The Unit Manager for Thermoforming reports directly to the Site Manager.
Key Responsibilities
Production Oversight
- Manage daily production operations, ensuring that goals are met for quality, quantity, timeliness, and cost.
- Develop and implement production schedules in conjunction with the Senior Planner and Production Manager.
- Coordinate with other departments to align resources and workflows.
- Lead Thermo Techs and oversee all shift operations.
- Support Site Manager’s safety goal of achieving a 2.7 TRIR (TRIR = (Number of Recordable Incidents / Total Hours Worked) * 200,000).
Process Optimization
- Analyze production processes to identify areas for improvement.
- Implement lean manufacturing principles to increase efficiency and reduce waste.
Team Leadership
- Lead, train, and motivate production staff, promoting teamwork and a positive work environment.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide coaching for skill development.
- Model Sun America’s Core Values daily and actively mentor others to do the same through actions, decisions, and communication.
Quality Control
- Ensure compliance with all quality and safety standards.
- Follow quality assurance programs and conduct regular product inspections.
Inventory Management
- Monitor inventory of raw materials and finished products.
- Coordinate with procurement to maintain adequate supply.
- Ensure organized and efficient storage and handling of materials.
Cost Management, Reporting & Budget Compliance
- Monitor and control production costs to meet budget targets.
- Analyze cost variances and identify cost-reduction opportunities.
- Collaborate with the finance team to align production with budgetary goals.
- Work to reduce production costs per pound sold by 3% annually.
- Prepare regular production reports for management review.
Overall
- Maintain flexibility for evolving plant needs—“duties as assigned” mentality expected of all leadership team members.
