Job Title: Thermoformer Operator
Department: Production / Thermoforming
Reports To: Shift Supervisor

Position Summary
The Thermoformer Operator is responsible for operating thermoforming equipment to produce plastic trays that meet Sun America’s quality, safety, and production standards. This role includes machine operation, product inspection, packing, documentation, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment. The Thermoformer Operator is expected to communicate effectively with supervision, follow standard operating procedures, and support continuous improvement efforts within the department.
This position is hands-on and production-focused and serves as a foundational role for advancement into Lead, Technical, or Supervisory positions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Machine Operation & Production
- Report directly to the Shift Supervisor and follow daily production schedules.
- Start, stop, and pre-heat thermoforming machines in accordance with established procedures.
- Monitor machine operation and performance throughout the shift.
- Load plastic rolls onto machines safely and correctly.
- Guide plastic through the machine as required to ensure proper forming.
- Cut rewind material to appropriate size to prevent grinder jams.
- Load and operate tape machines and counting scales.
- Understand and operate thermoforming equipment safely and efficiently.
- Complete machine downtime documentation accurately, including detailed root causes.
Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC)
- Understand product specifications and identify acceptable vs. nonconforming trays.
- Read and follow Product Specification Sheets.
- Perform required quality checks and inspections throughout the shift.
- Ensure trays are properly cleaned, stacked, and packed.
- Correctly label, mark, and seal boxes.
- Complete daily QA/QC and operator documentation neatly and accurately.
- Separate, identify, and weigh nonconforming trays per procedure.
- Ensure quality standards are maintained at all times.
Packaging & Material Handling
- Clean and stack trays by hand.
- Pack trays into boxes according to specifications.
- Sanitize hands any time you step away from packaging product.
- Prevent over-runs by communicating with end-of-line and supervision.
- Remove plastic scrap and waste as required.
- Assist with trash removal and general housekeeping.
Safety & Housekeeping
- Know the location and proper use of emergency stop equipment.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow all safety rules, PPE requirements, and sanitation procedures.
- Return from breaks on time and adhere to attendance expectations.
- Report safety hazards, excessive waste, or equipment concerns immediately.
Communication & Teamwork
- Communicate machine issues, formation problems, and quality concerns promptly to supervision.
- Notify supervisors of material needs (tape, boxes, labels, etc.).
- Work collaboratively with team members to meet production and quality goals.
- Conduct yourself professionally at all times and maintain confidentiality where required.
Qualifications
Required
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Basic math and counting skills.
- Ability to complete required documentation accurately.
- Strong attention to detail and quality.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
Preferred
- Prior manufacturing or thermoforming experience.
- Experience with quality inspections or packaging operations.
- Willingness to learn advanced machine operation and troubleshooting.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Manual dexterity required for handling trays, packaging materials, and controls.
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, heat, and moving machinery.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
