Under general supervision of a Child Development Services administrator or a site administrator (with input from the teacher(s) and Lead Teacher to whom the Children’s Center Assistant is assigned), assists the teacher in providing care, supervision, planned recreational and other learning opportunities and activities for children in the Infant/Toddler Program and School Aged Program by providing learning activity support to individuals and small groups of children and students.

Six (6) months paid or verifiable, supervised volunteer experience that has provided first hand knowledge of the needs of children in the program to which assigned is highly desirable.

Relevant experience and/or education in excess of entry requirements may permit employment at other than the first step. If employed at a higher step, salary increases are granted annually until reaching the end of the salary range.

- Works with children in the Infant/Toddler Program (ages 3 months to 5 years) or with students in the School Aged Program (ages 5 to 13 years) in small groups and/or on an individual basis in a structured learning environment to reinforce and follow up on instructional and other learning activities and with specific tasks to stimulate the individual child’s cognitive, creative, emotional and social skills and capabilities.
- Assists in protecting the health and safety of children by following health and safety rules, regulations, practices and procedures; by maintaining classroom rest and play areas in a safe, clean, neat and orderly manner; and, as necessary, by washing face and hands of children and helping to brush their teeth; washing and drying bedding used for nap and rest periods and by assisting in toileting children.
- Observes children and assists in the supervision and modeling of appropriate behavior through positive reinforcement techniques.
- Assists in supervising rest, nap, nutrition, meal and play times either in the classroom, on the playground or on field trips.
- Prepares and serves snacks and other meals as necessary and cleans up tables, counters and preparation areas following each meal.
- Assists in the preparing of materials and aids for instructional and other learning activities, such as, dependent upon assignment, arts and crafts or homework review.
- Performs clerical support duties, such as preparing, typing and copying instructional materials; maintaining files and records as necessary; and distributing, collecting and storing paper, supplies, materials, toys and play and recreation equipment.
- Provides support to the teacher by setting up and breaking down work, play and rest areas and displays and bulletin boards; operating audio-visual equipment; and maintaining cassettes, tapes, etc.
- Provides information to parents and visitors regarding Program activities and contacts parents as needed to obtain information concerning children and Program requirements as directed by the teacher.
- Participates in staff meetings and in-service training programs as assigned.
- Records student progress/abilities.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
