## ***Position Summary***

  • Under the supervision of a Sergeant the Deputy position performs

duties in the protection of life and property and the preservation of

order in Sumner County. The main responsibilities of this position

include enforcing all federal, state and local laws in accordance with

office rules and regulations. Duties include enforcing traffic laws,

investigation of crimes and accidents, and providing public assistance.

This employee will be required to exercise initiative and discretion

when faced with emergency conditions. This work involves an element of

personal danger.***

  • The Deputy may be assigned to either the Patrol or Support

Division.***

## ***Essential Functions***

  • Enforces all Federal, State and County laws, statutes and/or

resolutions;***

***Conducts traffic and criminal investigations;***

***Investigates and intervenes in domestic disputes;***

***Investigates suspicious conditions and complaints;***

  • Completes all necessary official forms and reports as required in a

timely manner;***

  • Searches for, collects, and identifies evidence found at crime

scenes;***

***Appears and testifies in court proceedings;***

***Serves civil and criminal process and warrants;***

***Provide Court House security;***

  • Apprehends and arrests violators in a safe and constitutional method

following established rules and regulations set by the department,

state, and the courts;***

***Directs traffic and issues citations for traffic law violations;***

  • Routinely patrols the county assisting citizens with personal, family

and social problems;***

***Answers citizen complaints and takes necessary corrective action;***

  • Alerts the citizens of hazardous and dangerous conditions (from

serious traffic accidents to severe weather conditions;***

***Informs the public on laws and general information;***

  • Assists other law enforcement and emergency service agencies as

required.***

## ***Marginal Functions***

***Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned;***

***Attends training seminars and classes as required.***

***May be required to cross train.***

## ***Position Requirements***

  • Experience:One year of law enforcement experience preferred not

mandatory. Employee is expected to acquire the necessary information and

skills to perform the job reasonably well within six months in the

position.***

  • Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent. Some college is

preferred. Must satisfy all requirements as set forth in KSA 74-5605

Qualifications of Applicant (Police Officer) for Training Course;

Requirements and complete 40 hours of continuing education training

annually as required by the state law enforcement training commission.

Must be in possession of or have the ability to obtain a valid Kansas

drivers license.***

  • Technical Skills:Knowledge of federal, state and local laws, law

enforcement techniques, good communication skills (written and oral) and

mathematics. Must have the ability to proficiently operate

communications equipment, weapons, and other related law enforcement

equipment; ability to meet and deal tactfully with the general public

and to communicate effectively and clearly, both orally and in writing;

the ability to access, input and retrieve information from the

computer.***

  • Problem Solving: Frequent problem solving exists. Problems involve

handling citizens complaints, civil disputes, victim trauma, finding

evidence for conviction of crime, and locating witnesses.***

  • Decision Making: Frequent de ision making responsibilities. Decisions

include determining whether to issue a warning, citation, make an

arrest, or to use force in a situation.***

  • Supervision:Work performance is reviewed by supervisor. Employee does

not have supervisory responsibilities over personnel.***
