We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Controller. This hybrid role requires working from one of our office locations in AR, ME or OK.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Assistant Controller plays a key leadership role in supporting the VP and Controller across all aspects of accounting, financial management, and internal controls for Summit Utilities, Inc. and its subsidiaries. This position ensures the integrity of financial reporting, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency, while driving alignment with corporate objectives. The Assistant Controller also provides leadership by ensuring that accounting procedures conform to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) pronouncements, where applicable, through the development and maintenance of appropriate financial policies, practices, controls, and reporting systems.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collaborates with the VP and Controller on financial and regulatory accounting, financial reporting (including external reporting), and financial systems decisions.
- Interfaces with other departments and external audit firms to resolve technical accounting issues across Summit and assists in evaluation and documentation.
- Ensures all accounting practices comply with legal guidelines and established accounting principles and policies.
- Monitors compliance with existing and emerging pronouncements and requirements, anticipates future requirements, and advises senior management on needed actions.
- Works with the Company to create and formalize internal controls and policies.
- Provides cross-functional leadership and management guidance, ensuring that all management functions are completed in accordance with Company policies.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the VP, Controller, or Chief Financial Officer.
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 15 years of progressive accounting experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; CPA designation required.
- Public accounting or accounting advisory background required.
- Strongly preferred: experience with SAP and/or Oracle, ERP implementations, and accounting in a regulated utility environment.
