What are the responsibilities and job description for the Laboratory Assistant position at Summa Health?
Performs a limited number of routine laboratory tests and initial sample preparation, collects specimens, distributes samples to work areas, and performs clerical functions.
Minimum Qualifications:
Formal Education Required:
- High School Diploma
Experience and Training Required:
- Six (6) months experience with exposure to clerical/detail oriented tasks.
- Prior experience in healthcare preferred.
Other Skills, Competencies and Qualifications:
- Population Specific Competency: Ability to effectively interact with populations of patients/customers with an understanding of their needs for self-respect and dignity
- Must work in bio-hazardous areas where exposure to bacterial contamination may occur
- Must maintain the confidentiality of test results
- Must have near visual acuity and manual dexterity sufficient to operate microscopes and other equipment requiring fine adjustment
- Must be able to communicate, verbally or in writing, test results to physicians and nursing units
- Must be able to move with efficiency between lab sections and nursing units
- Skill in use of computers or ability to acquire such skills to operate application packages used by department
- Assumes accountability for demonstrating behaviors consistent with the customer service policy
Level of Physical Demands:
- Medium: Exerts 20-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or ten to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force continuously to move objects.
