SUMMARY: The school nurse strengthens and facilitates the educational process by modifying or removing health-related barriers to learning in individual students and by promoting an optimal level of wellness for students and staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Other duties may be assigned.
- Assumes responsibility for appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, management, and/or referral activities.
- Effectively utilizes district technologies appropriate to the position and assumes responsibility for attending district training needed to perform designated responsibilities successfully.
- Maintains confidentiality, unquestionable integrity.
- Serves as a direct link between physicians, families, and community agencies to assure access and continuity of health care for students.
- Provide relevant instruction, counseling, and guidance to students, parents, and others concerning health-related issues.
- Uphold professional standards (the Missouri Nurse Practice Act).
- Adhere to district policies, State Law, and administrative guidelines.
- Provide surveillance of immunization records.
- Provide basic first aid for illness and injury according to school policy.
- Incorporate health education in encounters with parents, staff, and students.
- Assist in identifying and reporting suspected child abuse and neglect.
- Contribute to health information presented to special education staffing team.
- Perform nursing care for children with special health care needs as ordered by physician, or train and supervise designated aide.
- Maintain cumulative health records and perform clerical duties required by health program.
- Report regularly to supervisor/head nurse on identified health problems of students.
- Assume responsibility for maintenance of the health rooms including ordering supplies and equipment.
- Take and record accurate TPR, BP, and/or other symptoms presented by the student as necessary.
- Maintain daily log of all children seen for health-related problems.
- Authorize exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases with permission from school administration.
- Attend regular staff meetings and conferences regarding health services and health curriculum.
- Attend in-service training programs as needed.
