Position Overview:
Sullivan House High School is seeking a passionate and dedicated English Teacher to join our team. The ideal candidate will bring creativity, compassion, and high expectations to the classroom, helping students develop strong reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills that are essential for success in school and beyond.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and deliver engaging, standards-aligned English Language Arts instruction
- Teach courses such as English I-IV, Creative Writing, or Literacy Development
- Use culturally responsive teaching practices to connect literature and language to students’ lives
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners
- Foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment
- Assess and monitor student progress using formative and summative tools
- Collaborate with colleagues, support staff, and families to promote student achievement
- Participate in ongoing professional development and contribute to the school community
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, or related field (Master’s preferred)
- Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with English/Language Arts endorsement
- Prior teaching experience, especially in urban or alternative school settings, is a plus
- Strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills
- Commitment to student-centered learning, equity, and continuous improvement
