About the Job
We are seeking an analytical, hands-on Applications Engineer to support the Machining Division's Spindle and Toolholder Sales Group. This role owns the technical side of customer applications: understanding what the customer needs to machine, selecting and sizing the right Suhner solution, and supporting it from quote through installation. You will work closely with outside sales personnel, manufacturing representatives, customers and our internal engineering and service teams. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, well organized and comfortable moving between engineering detail and customer conversations.
Key Responsibilities
- Review customer applications, part drawings and machining requirements, and recommend the appropriate spindles, toolholders and machining units.
- Perform mechanical and application calculations (e.g., speeds, feeds, torque and power requirements) to size and validate solutions.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, including GD&T, and provide machine design support and layouts in SolidWorks.
- Provide technical and engineering support to outside sales personnel, manufacturing representatives and customers by phone, email and on site.
- Prepare technical proposals, quotes and estimates, and support accurate order processing.
- Support installation, start-up and troubleshooting of applications at customer sites, in coordination with the repair and service center.
- Deliver technical presentations, product demonstrations and customer training.
- Represent the company at trade shows and exhibitions.
- Provide feedback from the field to guide product research, development and strategic sales plans.
- Maintain application records, customer data and order information in ERP and CRM systems.
- Collaborate with sales, engineering, service and production to align technical and commercial efforts.
- Other tasks as required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, design engineering or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and industry experience will be considered.
- 7–8 years of industry experience in machine tools, spindles, tooling or manufacturing technology.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and the ability to read and interpret technical drawings, including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Understanding of manufacturing procedures and metal cutting tool applications.
- Ability to perform mechanical calculations and basic geometric and algebraic computations.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks (or comparable 3D CAD), MS Office, Adobe, and ERP and CRM systems.
- Ability to understand customer needs and clearly communicate the appropriate technical options.
- Excellent communication, presentation and phone skills for technical and executive audiences.
- Strong problem-solving, analytical and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with machine tools, motor spindles, toolholders or automated machining units.
- Experience in a technical sales or customer-facing applications environment.
- Experience with SQL analytics and data-driven decision-making.
- German or French as a second language (not required).
- Ability to adapt to a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
