Position Overview:
The Maintenance Manager is responsible for leading maintenance operations and is a key member of the management team for our high-volume commercial bakery manufacturing facility in Hayward, California. This role is responsible for ensuring safe reliable and cost-effective operation of all plant equipment and facilities.
The Maintenance Manager owns equipment uptime, preventative and predictive maintenance programs, and the overall effectiveness of the maintenance organization. This role leads a team of maintenance technicians and mechanics, partners cross-functionally with Production, Quality Assurance (QA), Sanitation, and Engineering, and drives continuous improvement through reliability-centered maintenance, TPM principles, and data-driven decision-making in a fast-paced food manufacturing environment. The Maintenance Manager should have strong leadership skills, hands-on industrial maintenance experience, and a background in food manufacturing or bakery operations.
Essential Functions:
Maintenance Leadership and Operations
- Lead, supervise and develop maintenance technicians, mechanics and external contractors.
- Plan, prioritize and oversee daily maintenance activities across all shifts.
- Coordinate emergency repairs and minimize production downtime.
- Partner with Production, Quality Assurance, Sanitation, Engineering and Continuous Improvement teams to support plant performance goals.
- Support installation, startup, commissioning, and validation of new equipment and capital projects.
- Maintain a positive working environment through collaboration and effective communication.
- Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the facility.
Equipment Reliability and Performance
- Own and improve equipment uptime, OEE, reliability, and preventive maintenance (PM) compliance.
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
- Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, refrigeration, and PLC-controlled systems.
- Lead root cause analysis (RCA) for chronic equipment failures and implement permanent corrective actions.
Systems, CMMS, and Documentation
- Maintain and improve CMMS and work order processes
- Ensure accurate maintenance records, asset data, and documentation
- Manage spare parts strategy, inventory controls, and standardization
- Develop maintenance SOPs, best practices, and training materials
Safety, Food Safety and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, GMP, HACCP, SQF, and all food safety and regulatory requirements
- Enforce safe work practices, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and preventive maintenance standards
- Support audits, inspections, and corrective action follow-up
- Demonstrates and adheres to all employee safety, human resources, food safety, and quality requirements, including but not limited to understanding the proper use of PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) and plant specific GMPs (Good Manufacturing Practices)
Continuous Improvement & Cost Control
- Drive TPM, autonomous maintenance, and reliability improvement initiatives
- Manage maintenance budgets, spend, and cost-saving initiatives
- Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency without compromising safety or product quality
Equipment and Systems
This role supports and maintains a wide range of industrial bakery and food manufacturing equipment, including, but not limited to:
- Industrial ovens
- Mixers and dough handling equipment
- Conveyors and material handling systems
- Packaging and high-speed production machinery
- Spiral coolers and freezers
- Pumps, motors, compressors, and utilities
- Pneumatic and hydraulic systems
- PLC systems and automation controls
- Refrigeration systems
Position Location: This is an on-site role based in Hayward, California, to support the bakery and company headquarters. Candidates must be located within a commutable distance to Hayward.
Qualifications
Required
- 5–10 years of industrial maintenance experience
- 3 years of maintenance leadership or supervisory experience
- Experience in food manufacturing, bakery, beverage, or FMCG environments
- Strong electrical and mechanical troubleshooting skills
- Experience with CMMS and preventive maintenance systems
- Working knowledge of OSHA and food safety regulations
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including off-shifts or weekends as required
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering, or a technical certification
- PLC troubleshooting experience
- High-speed packaging or automated production line experience
- Lean Manufacturing, TPM, or Continuous Improvement background
- Bilingual English / Spanish
