What are the responsibilities and job description for the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor position at Suffolk County Department of Health WIC Program?
The Suffolk County Department of Health Services WIC Program and Cornell Cooperative Extension are seeking a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to join our team. This position is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information, support, and encouragement to pregnant and breastfeeding WIC participants.
Qualifications:
- Must be bilingual in English & Spanish
- Must have breastfeeding experience
- Must have a valid NYS driver’s license and reliable transportation
- Basic computer skills (Typing, Familiar with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, etc)
Peer counselors perform the following job duties:
- Provide counseling and support throughout the pregnancy and while breastfeeding, utilizing counseling skills acquired during training
- Be a resource for participants and make connections with other community services
- Prepare a participant for what to expect at the start of breastfeeding
- Be available to participants after delivery and when they return home
Additional information about the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor position:
- Part-time, 28 hours per week
- WIC Clinic hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday 9:00am-5:00pm and Thursdays 10:00am-6:00pm
- Job location in the Shirley WIC office
- Starting pay rate is $17.75 per hour
