Founded in 1968, the Studio Museum in Harlem is the nexus for artists of African descent locally, nationally, and internationally and for work that has been inspired and influenced by Black culture. It is a site for the dynamic exchange of ideas about art and society.

Job Summary

The Public Program Fellow will be involved in researching, developing, producing, and evaluating adult public programs and events, conducting outreach to cultural partners, and brainstorming audience development strategies. The museum fellow will be responsible for communicating and coordinating with a diverse group of program participants and facilitators, including exhibiting artists, lecturers, performers, scholars, educators, writers, community organizers, and arts and culture organizations.

At the Studio Museum in Harlem, fellows will be part of a small team tasked with designing public programs and community engagement opportunities for adult audiences. These include artist talks, hands-on art-making workshops, film screenings, book clubs, panel discussions, and artist-in-residence programs.

This position is a one-year funded position with an expected end date.

The ideal candidate is flexible and willing to take on a wide range of administrative and programmatic responsibilities. They must also be comfortable interfacing with the public on a regular basis. Fellows are to be included in the Studio Museum Institute’s suite of professional development opportunities that focus on early career skills development and exposure.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Research and ideate on program ideas, key collaborators, and program goals in support of the Studio Museum’s mission.
  • Responsible for administrative tasks to support a robust public programs calendar. Must be able to schedule, attend, and note-take for program development, program execution, and post-program evaluation.
  • Support department to research and help develop new relationships and deepen existing connections with wider NYC arts & culture community.
  • Collaborate with appropriate departments to create social media content and promotional materials for programs.
  • Collaborate with Curatorial department to help create artist-centered programs that support exhibitions and the suite of programs.
  • Conduct program evaluations and maintain statistics, records, and documentation of programs.
  • Support in the production and execution of public programs that range in size and scale. Ability to work to support guests and publics attending programs.

Skills And Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to support successful development and execution of public programs.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, and ability to work with close attention to detail in a team environment.
  • Familiarity with community outreach strategies and developing relationships with social, cultural, and local organizations in New York City.
  • Proficiency with and accuracy in using MS Office products, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and other related software applications.
  • Flexible and able to work well as part of the Learning & Engagement Department.
  • Knowledge of contemporary art, artists’ practice, and programmatic strategies.
  • Passion for the dual mission of achieving artistic and educational excellence.

Education And Experience

  • Candidates must have a BA/BFA in art, art history, art education, arts administration, Africana studies or related fields, or have equivalent experience in public programming in lieu of a degree.
  • 1-3 years of relevant professional experience working on programming with responsibilities ranging from planning, developing, and implementing programs.

Physical Demands

  • Regular packing, lifting, and carrying program supplies.
  • Regular production demands setting up program equipment and A/V tech.

Work Environment

  • Fast-paced environment with varying levels of guests and employees present.
  • Building Accessibility – office locations are wheelchair accessible, with elevators in the building. Other accessibility accommodations can be further discussed.

Compensation

$50,000 annually

Salary is commensurate with experience within the guidelines of a small not-for-profit. A competitive benefits package is provided, including medical, dental, life and long-term disability insurance, a retirement account, and substantial vacation time.
